4. Throw – in Plane Violations4-47-1 The opponent of the thrower shall NOT have any part of his/her person through the inbounds side of the throw-in boundary-line plane until the ball has been released on a throw-in pass. The thrower may penetrate the plane provided he/she does not touch the inbounds area before the ball is released on the throw-in pass. The opponent in this situation may legally touch or grasp the ball. The thrower shall have a minimum of 3 feet horizontally.

5. Throw-in Plane Violation Warning: Penalty Technical Foul or Warning? The first violation of the throw-in boundary-line plane by an opponent of the thrower shall result in a team warning for delay being given (one warning per team per game). The warning does not result in the loss of the opportunity to move along the end line when and if applicable. The second or additional violation will result in a technical foul assessed to the offending team. If an opponent of the thrower reaches through the thrower-in boundary-line plane and touches or dislodges the ball while in possession of the thrower or being passed to a teammate outside the boundary line? Technical Foul If an opponent of the thrower reaches through the throw-in boundary-line plane and fouls the thrower? Intentional Foul

6. Case Plays • While attempting a throw-in, A1 holds the ball through the plane of the end line. B1 slaps the ball from A1’s hand(s)? No violation has occurred, play continues. What do we have if B1 grabs the ball and then throws it through B’s basket? Score two point for Team B During an attempted throw-in, A1 holds the ball through the plane and hands it to A2? Throw-in violation. Thrower A1 inadvertently holds the ball through the end line plane during a throw-in. B1 is able to get his/her hands on the ball and A1 cannot pull it back? A held ball is called.

7. The sideline is very near the spectators leaving little space out of bounds for A1 to make a throw-in. As a result, the administering official has directed B1 to move back a step to give the thrower some room. As soon as the ball is handed or bounced to A1, B1 moves right back to the boundary line in front of A1? This is a violation by B1 and will result in a warning for Team B which is reported to the scorer and to the head coach. B1 moves to his/her original position in order to defend? No violation in this case as B1 is allowed to defend the area if the throw-in is attempted there. Team A has a designated spot throw-in along the end line. Thrower A1 extends the ball with his/her arms over the end line such that part of the forearms, hands and the ball are entirely on the inbounds side of the boundary line. B2 slaps A1 on the wrist and dislodges the ball. When a defender makes contact with a thrower-in, the result is an intentional foul. Where A1’s arms are located (on the inbounds or out-of-bounds side of the boundary line) is immaterial for this penalty to be assessed. A1 is awarded two free throws and Team A awarded a throw-in at the spot nearest the foul.

9. Free Throw Huddle Delay Warning • The first violation for contact with free thrower or a huddle of two or more players by either team prior to a free throw results in a team warning for delay. Any additional violation results in a team technical foul which includes two free throws plus the ball for a division line throw-in. Case Plays The calling official has reported the foul and proceeds to his/her proper position for the first of two free throws awarded to A1. B1 and B2 are huddling in the lane. Team B warning Two Team B players are not occupying the first two marked spaces next to the end line as required. Team B will be directed to occupy the required spaces. If there is delay, a team technical foul shall be charged to Team B.

10. Comment • If the free thrower is not in the semicircle when the administering official is ready, a technical foul is charged to the free thrower. If the free thrower is in the semicircle, but does not accept the ball, it shall be placed on the floor and the count started.

13. Video How does this related to high school basketball? Following a charged time-out Team B is still with their coach on the sideline when the official sounds the whistle to indicate play will resume. Four players of B return to the court just in time to play defense as A1 attempts an unsuccessful three-pointer. B1 rebounds and throws a long pass to B5 who enters the court just in time to catch the pass. A technical foul is immediately charged to Team B for failing to have all players return to the court at approximately the same time.

14. Last Case Plays • A1 has the ball out of bounds for a throw-in. A1 completes the throw-in to A2 and then purposefully delays his/her return by taking four or five steps along the end line prior to coming inbounds behind a screen set by A3 and A4. A1 gets a return pass from A2 and takes an unchallenged try for a goal. A1 is charged with a technical foul for purposefully delaying his/her return to the court. A4 A3 A5 A2 A1

15. After a lengthy substitution process involving multiple substitutions for both Team A and Team B, A5 goes to the bench and remains there, mistakenly believing he/she has been replaced. The ball is put in play even though Team A has only four players on the court. Team A is bringing the ball onto A’s frontcourt when the coach of Team A realizes they have only four players. The coach yells for A5 to return and he/she sprints onto the court and catches up with the play. No technical foul is charged to A5. A5’s return to the court was not deceitful, nor did it provide A5 an unfair positioning advantage on the court.
