Shopping Malls Sidewalks Parking Lots Restaurants Your House Schools Neighborhood Gas Station Roads Office Buildings Rain & snowmelt travels as surface water MUCH FASTER In urban areasthan in natural areas.Storm water that drains off of impervious surfaces and into surface waters forms non-point pollution.

Why Fish Need Clean Water • Dirt and Gravel get washed from lawns, constructions sites, and driveways into road gutters. • This causes murky water. • Murky water gets less light, so many animals, plants, and eggs cannot survive. • Water temp increases. • Fish eggs are smothered. • Aquatic organisms have to ‘see it to eat it.

  9. 37% of Canadians believe water entering a stormdrain goes to a treatment plant. IT DOES NOT! Dirt, oil, gasoline, gravel, salt, garbage, animal droppings and chemicals (fertilizers & pesticides) are washed into the storm sewers. The last stop for stormwater is the Red Deer River.

  13. How Does Contaminated Water From Roads, Driveways and Sidewalks Get To The River? Through this!!

  14. Storm Drains Lead Directly To the River? Photographs by Trout Unlimited Canada Storm Drains are connected to an underground system of pipes which empties into the river (outfalls). Storm Drains collect water and other debris from roads, sidewalks, lawns, etc.

  15. Ways We Can Protect Our Freshwater • Take your car to a car wash • Don’t over use fertilizers, herbicides and/or pesticides • Put sweepings into the garbage • Leave grass clippings on the lawn • Pick up pet waste • Fix leaks in your car

  16. Non-point pollution Is The Cumulative effect of ALL OF US Living Our Normal Lives. Let’s all be the solution to non-point pollution!

  17. Here’s What You’ll Be Doing * Marking storm drains * Collecting litter * Delivering handbills * Recording storm drains marked and handbills delivered

  18. Safety First… • Always stay in sight of supervisor. • Cross street only with supervisor. • Never enter a residence. • Designate painted areas using pylons. • Walk carefully during activity. • Stay with group, don’t get separated. • Avoid homes you are unsure of or where a dog is.

Final Reminders… • Painters, roll up sleeves. • Sweep area to be painted • Pour loonie-sized amounts of paint. • Stand on the stencil. • Carry wet stencil carefully. • Stay in view of painting crew. • Remain on sidewalks when delivering handbills- respect property. • Insert door hanger securely on doorknob, mailbox or screen door. • Record storm drains marked and handbills delivered.
