  2. How Results are Reported Grades 6-8

  3. Composite Performance Index(CPI)measures how close a school or district is to having all students score in the Proficient/Advanced categories

  4. Grades & Subjects Tested Spring ‘10

  5. Student Growth Percentiles • A new way of measuring student progress

  6. Tracking Student Progress • MCAS performance level and scaled scores answer, “How much has this student achieved compared to the state’s grade- level learning standards?” • SGP answers the question, “How much has this student achieved over the previous year compared to his or her academic peers? • Compares students to “academic peers” (those who had similar historical MCAS results) • SGP indicates how a student’s growth is compared to that of peers

  7. Student Growth Percentile (SGP) Laura has three years of MCAS scores: 230, 230, and 230. Based on her academic peers’ performance, her SGP for year 3 is determined to be 35. A percentile is a statistic that indicates the percentage of a reference group obtaining scores equal to or less than the individual’s score. 262 Advanced 65% Proficient Laura’s Score 230 SGP = 35 Needs Improvement 35% 218 Warning/Failing

  8. SGP, A Visual Example Laura’s SGP of 35 means 35th percentile. Imagine her academic peers as100 people standing in a single file line from highest to lowest score. A person who scored in the 35th percentile is 35th from the end. end of line = lowest score 218 35th percentile 34 people are behind of her. 65 people are in front of her. front of line = highest score 262

  9. SGP Range

  10. School/District Growth Percentiles • SGPs are created for each school and district . • SGP represents a “typical” growth for students in the school or district (Half will be above 50; half will be below 50.)

  11. Interpreting MCAS Results • Look at student performance from “achievement” and “growth” perspective. • Students with history of poor MCAS scores may make progress, but still not reach Proficient level. • Students with a history of very high MCAS scores may be Proficient or Advanced, but have a low growth score.

  38. Strategies for ImprovementNext Steps • Analyze and use data • Individual student analysis■Item analysis • Cohort analysis■ Growth data • Examine curriculum • Use formative assessment • Support sub-groups with Special Ed and ELL staff • Provide test-taking strategies and practice • Provide tutoring at High School through academic support grant • Provide after school MCAS support • Provide Title I, remedial math and reading support to targeted students • Develop individual student success plan (ISSP) • Engage parents and the community in student efforts
