  4. Standards Matter! • They are the heart of our curriculum • Our materials support our core learning standards, not the other way around • We would not be here having this conversation today if standards did not matter

  5. Today’s Outcomes: • Develop an understanding of the potential changes that the standards revision process will create. • Develop a deeper understanding of the new standards, grade level expectations, and student outcomes.

  6. Uncovering the State Perspective • Text Rendering Activity (Read pages 1-12 of the New Standards) • What practices might the state be trying to end? • What practices might the state be trying to begin? • What are the implications for our district? • Chart Beginnings/Endings

Selecting Essential Learnings • Does it have endurance?  Do we really expect our student to retain the knowledge and the skills over time as opposed to merely learning it for a test?  • Does it have leverage?  Will proficiency in this standard help the student in other areas of the curriculum and other academic disciplines? • Does it develop student readiness for the next level of learning?  Is it essential for success in the next unit, course, or grade level?
