  2. Foundation – Ps. 19:9 “The fear of the LORD isclean, enduring for ever: the judgments (mishpat) of the LORD are true (emeth) and righteous altogether.” Heb. tahor - pure, clean (morally, ethically). Weightier Matters of the Law - Judgement

  3. Over-arching Principle Context Deut. 10:12-22 – Basis for repudiation of respect of persons. 7 titles of God used in verse 17. Why would such a supreme God need to have respect of faces? Hence, equity towards fatherless, widow and stranger – Ps. 68:5 – “A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, is God in his holy habitation.” Weightier Matters of the Law - Judgement

  4. Equity in Judgement Lev. 19:15 – Beware of imbalance! “poor” – dal - dangling, i.e. (by implication) weak or thin; hence poor or low. “mighty” – gadol – great; distinguished of men. Ex. 23:1-3 – Beware of improper support for the majority, or the ‘underdog’! “cause” – rib – controversy, dispute, contest. “decline/wrest” – natah – to bend away. “countenance” – hadar – honour, favour. Motivation for Respect of Persons Deut. 1:16-17 – Discounting the diminutive or deferring to the powerful. “respect” – nakar – acknowledge, regard. “persons” – paniym – faces. “small” – qatan – small, insignificant. “great” – gadol - great; distinguished. “afraid” – gur – fear, stand in awe. Examples of Respect of Persons 1 Sam. 16:19-23 - David enters Saul’s court by reputation – antecedents unknown to Saul. 1 Sam. 17:55-58 – Antecedents become an issue in light of vow – Vv.25-27,30. 1 Sam. 18:1-2 – Saul’s embarrassment shows. 1 Sam. 16 – David not invited – hated by brothers (Ps. 23:5) – perhaps dubious origin. 1 Sam. 18:17-19 – Saul’s oath broken. 2 Sam. 21 – Dire consequences – 500 year old oath avenged on oath breaker’s family.   8. Josiah and Jehoiakim Jer. 22:1-3 – Call to righteousness – Jehoiakim’s evil in view. Jer. 22:13-15 – Jehoiakim’s greed and unrighteousness contrasted with Josiah. Jer. 23:1-6 – Promise of better things to come. God’s righteousness revealed in His treatment of a father and son with diverse values and ways – Ezek. 18. Weightier Matters of the Law - Judgement

  9. Equity in Judgement - Ezek. 18 7 occs. of mishpat - V. 5, 19, 21, 27 (“lawful”). V. 8 (“judgement”). V. 9, 17 (“judgements”). Vv.6-9 - 17 qualities (positive and negative). Vv.10-13 – Evil son condemned – Cp. Josiah and Jehoiakim. Vv.14-18 – Wicked father/righteous son – Cp. Amon and Josiah. Vv.19-24 – Repentance saves – Evil kills.   10. James 2:1-5 (Weymouth) “My brethren, you must not make distinctions between one man and another while you are striving to maintain faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, who is our glory. For suppose a man comes into one of your meetings wearing gold rings and fine clothes, and there also comes in a poor man wearing shabby clothes, and you pay court to the one who wears the fine clothes, and say, ‘Sit here; this is a good place’; …” Weightier Matters of the Law - Judgement

Listen, my dearly-loved brethren.
