  2. Outline(大綱) • The workshop will consist of 2 parts: • 1:30 - 2:50pm – use of wiki for internal and external purposes (inclusion and outreach) • 3:00 - 4:30pm – Use Facebook, blog, YouTube, Instant Messaging and RSS to enhance inclusion and outreach (about 15 mins will be spent on each social media)

  3. Social media(社交媒體) • Social media have been simply defined as “the media we use to be social” (Safko & Brake, 2010, p. 3). • They are open(開放), accessible(易接觸的), outreaching(具伸展性的)and user-friendly(方便用户的)applications that enable users to: • create(創作), • edit(編輯)and • share(分享) • ideas, information and comments with each other instantly(即時)(Mayfield, 2008). • Wiki, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and blogs are examples of social media tools.

  4. Library inclusion and outreach(圖書館的包容及推廣) • Libraries support social inclusion(社區包容) by promoting equal opportunities(提倡平等機會及多元化)and accommodating diversity多元化to facilitate the active participation of each individual in the library programmes and services (鼓勵個人積極參與圖書館活動) • (Department of Economic and Social Affairs-United Nations, 2012). • Library outreach programs(推廣活動)which are channels(渠道)by which libraries “…reach out to their users(伸展到使用者), to encourage use of the library and its resources, and to promote a positive image on campus and often in the community” (提倡在校園及社區的正面形象)(Carter & Seaman, 2011, p. 164). • Library policies that integrate directive for inclusion/outreach can be used as tools that ensures libraries achieve their mission of serving the disadvantaged in the community (Chu, 2012).

  5. Wiki (維基百科) • Wiki is a website(網站)that allows users to create a hypertext(超文本)and revise it by adding, deleting, or changing any part of it (Cress & Kimmerle, 2008). • PBworksand Google Sites are examples of wiki. • It was found that librarians internally(對內) used wikis tofacilitate the co-construction of web pages(網站的共同創建) and archive different versions of work online(儲存不同檔案) (Chu, 2009). • Externally(對外), wikis can be used to enhance information sharing(促進資訊分享) between librarians(圖書館員) and library users(圖書管使用者)(Chu, 2009), and “engage patrons(顧客)in the online community” (Maxymuk, 2007).

Wiki - National Library of Australia(澳洲國立圖書館)- 1 • In NLA, wikis are used to support both internal and external collaboration activities. • The librarian (R7) in my study commented that “for external(對外), we use it to join community (連接社群)with people outside the library... For internal, it has been used for staff (供員工使用)across the library and exercise whatever projects and programmes.”

  8. Wiki - National Library of Australia - 3 • Externally(對外), the staff uses wikis to share information(分享資料), and connect with people outside the library(連接社會). • People may post questions and provide feedbacks via the wiki.

  9. Wiki as a Personal Information Management tool(個人管理工具) • Example: Dr. Sam Chu’s PBworks • Wiki can be used to manage and organize personal information.

  10. How to use PBworks?(如何運用 PBworks?)(Video 1) - 1 • Step 1. Sign up for a Pbworks account(建立戶口) • http://pbworks.com/ • Click Login (登入)at the top right corner of the page. • Click Sign up.

  11. How to use PBworks?(如何運用 PBworks?)(Video 1) - 2 • Step 1. • Fill in the information and click CREATE ACCOUNT(創立戶口). • Activate your PBworks account by clicking the link in the confirmation email.

  12. How to use PBworks? (Video 1) - 3 • Step 2. Create a workspace(創立工作空間) • Click Create a new workspace (創立作業空間). • Enter the workspace’s address and other information, and click Next (繼續)

  13. How to use PBworks? (Video 1) - 4 • Step 2. Create a workspace(創立工作空間) • Choose the security setting and click Take me to my workspace (到我的作業空間).

  14. How to use PBworks?(Video 1) - 5 • Step 3. Authorize group members to join the workspace(允訊組員加入空間) • Click Invite more people(發出邀請).

  15. How to use PBworks?(Video 1) - 6 • Step 3. Authorize group members to join the workspace • Enter your group members’ email address. • Choose Administrator in permission level. • Click Add users(加入用戶).

  16. How to use PBworks? (Video 2) - 1 • Step 4. Create and edit a wiki page(建立並編輯維基頁首) • Click Create a page(建立頁面)and enter the name of the page. • Edit an existing page by clicking Edit(編輯) on top of the page. • Edit the page by entering and formatting the text.

  17. How to use PBworks? (Video 2) - 2 • Step 4. Create and edit a wiki page(建立並編輯維基頁首) • Click Save(儲存). • Or “Save and Continue”

  19. How to use PBworks?(Video 2) - 4 • Step 5. Insert table and video(插入圖表及影片) • Click Insert and then Video. • Choose Youtube and paste the URL of the video. • Click Next(繼續)and then Insert Plugin (插入外置程式).

  20. How to use PBworks? (Video 3) - 1 • Step 6. Upload files(上載檔案) • Click Pages & Files(頁面和檔案). • Choose Upload files(上載檔案). • Select the files from your computer and click open.

  21. How to use PBworks? (Video 3) - 2 • Or… • Go to Edit(編輯) • Choose Images and files(圖案和檔案)on the right hand side. • Select Upload files(上載檔案). • OR… • Select Insert image from URL(從URL插入圖案)

  22. How to use PBworks?(Video 3) – 3 • Step 7. View revision history(查看歷史) • Click Page History • Select two different version and click Compare.

  23. How to use PBworks?(Video 3) – 4 • Step 8. Change Email notification setting • Click My PBworks in top left corner of the page. • Choose the email notification frequency under Preferences. • Click Submit(提交).

  24. Exercise • Example: http://kb.lib.hku.hk/wiki/Theses_and_Dissertations • Try to develop this online workspace on PBworks that allows librarians and users to co-construct(共同創建)a page regarding Theses and Dissertations

  25. Blogs (部落格)– e.g., Blogger, Wordpress • A web-based journal presented in reverse chronological order that consists of a person’s thoughts and ideas posted on the web for multiple viewers (Flatley, 2005). • One librarian (R7) agreed that blogs are useful for book talks/book discussion, exhibitions and library news posting. • Another respondent (R23) also found that blogs can be used for library instruction and guiding online users.

  26. Blogs (部落客)- National Library of Australia(澳洲國立圖書館) - 1 • In NLA, librarians used blogs for various kinds of purpose, e.g., • Behind the scenes blog shows how the librarians catalogue, collect(收集), digitize(數碼化)and preserve (保存)the library’s material

  27. Blogs - National Library of Australia - 2 • Page turnersshare what National Library of Australia staff love to read(員工推介), and recommend books for library patrons.

  30. How to build a blog? -1(如何創立部落格?) • Step 1. Sign in to Blogger with your Google Account(已Google戶口登入Blogger) • https://www.blogger.com/ • Enter your Gmail and password, and click Sign in (登入). • Click Create a limited Blogger profile(創立具限制性的部客個人檔案) and enter your Display Name, and then click Continue to Blogger(繼續到部落格).

Write your post(撰寫帖子) • Choose a blog in your Dashboard. • Click New Post(新增帖子). • Give your post a title (optional) and enter the post itself. • When you‘re done, click the Preview(預覽)button at the top to make sure it's ready to go. • Click the Publish(刊登)button to publish your post.

  33. How to build a blog?(Video) - 4 • Step 4. View and comment(觀看其他發帖並評價) • Click View blog(查看部落格)to read the blog entries • Click No comment(無評論)to respond to a blog post and click Publish(刊登).

Facebook • A online social networking site(社交網站)that allows users to connect and interact with other users (Wiley & Sisson, 2006) • Facebook was found to be useful in enhancing libraries’ social visibility(提升圖書館社區能見度)through profiles that presented a uniform identity(統一身份) (Chu & Nalani-Meulemans, 2008). • A librarian (R10) strongly agreed that Facebook assists his/her library in providing book talks(講座), exhibitions(展覽), virtual reference services(虛擬引用服務), online user guide(網上用戶指南) and library news(最新消息) update.

  35. Facebook - State Library of New South Wales(新南威爾斯州國立圖書館)- 1 • In SLNSW, Facebook is a channel to post library-related news(最新消息)and announcements(宣佈), a platform to provide reference services(索引服務) and a medium to communicate (溝通平台)with its stakeholders.

  36. Facebook - State Library of New South Wales - 2 • They introduce library collection(館藏) and recommend award-winning books (推介得獎書目)on Facebook.

  37. Facebook - State Library of New South Wales - 3 • The librarians also update (更新) people about library’s news(新聞)and information(資訊)

  38. Facebook - State Library of New South Wales - 4 • Library users can also search library collection and resources on Facebook.

  39. Facebook - State Library of New South Wales - 5 • Users can communicate and interact with the librarians (用者可與圖書館管理員溝通)by posting messages on the wall and commenting on the Facebook posts.

  40. How to create a Facebook page? – 1(如何創立Facebook 專頁?1) • Step1. Sign up a Facebook account(建立戶口) • http://www.facebook.com/ • Fill in the information as required. • Click Sign Up (註冊). • Activate your Facebook account by clicking the link in the confirmation email.

Create a Facebook page(設立Facebook 首頁) • Click “Company, Organization or Institution”. • Choose Organization and enter name of the library. • Tick “I agree to Facebook Pages Terms” and Click Get Started. • Fill in the profile information or click Skip (跳過).

  43. How to update a Facebook page? – 1(如何更新Facebook專頁?-1) • Step 1. Post a new status(張貼狀態) • Enter the status in the textbox and Click Post. • Step 2. Respond to a status(回覆狀態) • Click Like(讚好)to like a status. • Enter the comment in the textbox below and Press Enter.

  44. How to update a Facebook page?(Video 2) - 2 • Step 3. Invite people to join the Page(發出邀請) • Click Build Audience on the top of the page. • Choose Invite Email Contacts(發出電郵邀請)to send promotional emails to users. • Choose Invite Friends(邀請朋友) to invite selected friends to join this page. • Choose Share Page(分享頁面)to share this page with all your friends on Facebook.

  45. How to create an event on FB?(如何在FB成立活動?) • You can create new events(創立活動首頁)from the events app below your Page's cover photo. • Put in the information of the event, click Create (創立).

  46. How to start a poll on FB?(如何在FB創立投票?) • In a group/event, click Ask Question(提問)at the top of the group. • Enter your question and add poll options (加入選舉選項)if you wish. • Click Post(發帖)to share it with the group. Only group members can answer questions or vote on polls that appear in a group.

  47. YouTube • YouTube is an online video sharing site(影片分享網站)where users can upload(上載), view(觀看), share(分享) and comment(評價) on video clips (Duffy, 2007). • Librarians can produce videos for a variety of purposes, including promotion(宣傳)and outreach(伸展), library instruction and archiving(教學及存檔). They also employ videos to “help the patrons in finding useful information” (Ariew, 2008). • A librarian (R4) commented that “we have a YouTube channel” and “I make short tutorials for online classes”.

  48. YouTube - University of South Florida Libraries • In USF Libraries, YouTube is used for online library tutorials, instruction of research skills, promotion of library resources and etc.

  49. How to upload a YouTube video?(如何上載影片?)(Video) (影片) • Step 1. Sign in YouTube account • http://www.youtube.com/ • Click Sign inand enter your Gmail and password. • Step 2. Upload a YouTube video • Click Upload and select video from your computer. • Edit the setting by choosing category and privacy setting, and then click Save.

  50. Instant Messaging (短訊) • Instant messaging allows real-time text-based (以文字為主)communication between two or more users on the Internet (Williamson & Parry, 2004). • It is mainly used for providing virtual(虛擬)reference services, handling library-related enquiryand facilitating internal staff communication(職員內部溝通) within the libraries (Chu & Du, 2012). • It helps to enhance users’ social presence and facilitate a sense of connection between the librarians and patron (Boulos& Wheelert, 2007).
