  2. My Charter • Expand market for Oilfield Services • Introduce new technology • R&D for India specific solutions • Market entry and for Smart cards, payphones • Market entry and manufacturing for Electricity and Gas Meters • Develop a 10 year strategic plan

  3. Three months of reality check • India was opening but not yet opened • 45% of India’s energy consumption was non-conventional • ONGC and OIL were the only O&G customers and not based on world oil prices • Electricity and Gas tariffs were dependent on political will

  4. The revelation – the country was on the move • Despite having power for only two or three hours a day, people were • Trying to connect to the rest of the world • Watching color television at the village • Taking courses in computers • And, cell phones were coming

  5. So by the time I left • ONGC, Reliance, Cairn, Nico, Shell, Selan, Oil, BG… • As Schlumberger, we had: • doubledour Oilfield Services business • helped drill the first deepwater well • sold 6 million smart cards incl. the petro-card • installed the first smart fuel stations • established factories for Electricity and Gas Meters

  6. Later, I went back and set up two sofware companies out of India – Aditi and Talisma

  7. Bottom Line • There are many challenges: • trained management • infrastructure • many things have gone from 32 years to 32 minutes – others still are at the same pace • But, more importantly, there are great opportunities in India!!!
