  2. Ultimate goal • Full integration • All health standards are addressed during the year. • Have teachers use nutrition as the vehicle to teach core subjects. • Trimester maps include nutrition throughout core subject areas.

  3. Prior to Weaving Nutrition Training • Focused on providing and creating nutrition lesson activities and worksheets that met core curriculum standards. • Teacher trainings highlighted and modeled stand alone nutrition lessons.

  4. After Weaving Nutrition training • Focused more on how to incorporate nutrition into the trimester maps and units/themes. • Realized that we need to involve teachers every step of the way. • Connected with NEC to brainstorm ideas on how to approach this endeavor.

  5. Met with District leadStaff Development Coordinator • Questions asked: • Are Health Ed Standards adopted? NO • Is there an official health ed curriculum? NO • Does the District follow Open Court or Houghton Mifflin? Houghton.Mifflin • Are there trimester maps for all subjects? All subjects, except for language arts • Do all school sites follow trimester maps? Depends on school site. If yes, might not be taught in the same order. • Showed MUSD pacing guide as example • What core subjects/standards do you see nutrition fitting into most easily? • Language arts: writing prompts, problem solution, persuasive writing, vocab and concept development, listening and speaking (ELL), reading comprehension • Math

Developed Teacher Training • Decision Making vs Health Standards • Focused on decision making skill* • Teachers worked in their grade level groups to come up with decision making and nutrition themed lesson/activity ideas linked to LA and Math standards • Teacher advisor pre-selected standards to help facilitate the activity *Adapted Raisins or Roll-ups (HKRC)

Focus on one grade level, one subject area • Ask 5th grade teachers to make one of their research projects related to nutrition • Obesity epidemic in the US • Lesson plan, teacher rubric and rubric for peer evaluation provided • English-Language Arts Standards 5th Grade: • Listening and Speaking: 2.0 Speaking Applications: 2.2 Deliver informative presentations about an important idea, issue, or event • Writing: 2.0 Writing Applications: 2.3 Write research reports about important ideas, issues, or events
