  3. Engineering Fun Friday: Your Goal You and your group of friends are applying for a special summer internship at A.Ward’s Civil Engineering Firm here in Charlotte. This opportunity would look great on your college application! The firm wants to assess how well you understand the basic principles of mechanical energy, particularly in the form of the transfer between Kinetic and Potential Energy.

  4. Your Mission • Design a roller coaster model with multiple features with a limited amount of resources. Your group must create a roller coaster using only the provided materials that will transport a marble through TWO loops and through TWO hills. You will only be provided 30 minutes to accomplish the task. You must label your design to demonstrate 4 areas of PE and 4 areas of KE.

  5. Materials • Materials: • Four halves of pool noodles • 1 meter of duct tape • A set of scissors • A marble • Potential and Kinetic Energy Labels • A meter stick (for calculating measurements) • Any surfaces within a 1.5 meter radius of your workspace.

  6. Final Analysis • In order for the A.Ward’s Civil Engineering Firm to offer you the position, they also want to see that you can accurately collect and record data. Remember, ENGINEERS EXHIBIT STRONG MATH SKILLS & ACCURACY! Please record the required data on the Internship Sheet. In addition, you must sketch and label the Kinetic and Potential Energy on the Internship Sheet so that the firm can better assess your understanding. EACH INTERN CANDIDATE SHOULD COMPLETE THEIR OWN SHEET.
