  2. Overview of ALHS: Abraham Lincoln High School, SFUSD, a comprehensive public high school located in the Sunset district of San Francisco; CA distinguished school Student population: 2,000 Student composition: Chinese: 45%; Latino: 25%; ELL: 25%; White: 4% Admission rate: 9.5%
  3. History of ALHS CIP: First established in 1997 Re-established in 2011 Class of 2015 cohort: 28 students Class of 2016 cohort: 21 students Class of 2017 cohort: 36 students Students are almost guaranteed a seat at Lincoln high school Students take two of six periods daily in Chinese

  5. Our CIP feeder schools Alice Fong Yu K-8 Chinese Immersion School Herbert Hoover Middle School Other students who pass the SFUSD’s Chinese proficiency test may be admitted
  6. The ultimate goal of our CIP All students will reach AP Chinese’s proficiency level in speaking, listening, reading and writing Mandarin Chinese. All students will be bilingual, biliterate, bicultural and will be able to apply their language and cultural knowledge and skills to advocate for mutual understanding of both Chinese and American cultures.

  9. Challenges and Possible Solutions
  10. Linguistic and program challenges Standardized tests (CST, MAPP, SATII, AP, ACT) are all given in English. Lack of appropriate Chinese language and content classes. How much Chinese is “enough”?
  11. Assessment The SFUSD’s Chinese language assessment to all 8th graders who have taken Chinese language classes ALHS’s CIP Chinese language assessment HSK (being considered)
  12. Recommendations Should not take more than two periods of English daily Should not use a content that requires Chinese proficiency level that is higher than AP Chinese level Parent-student buy-in is crucial Should take advantage of community resources (such as our YMCA after school program)
  13. Next step? Establishment of sister school with China’s high school Annual or every-other-year travel to China for student community service following the “Global Glimpse” model
