  6. PROJECT IGNITION • National Program for Peer to Peer Diving Safety Program • Program Parent is the National Youth Leadership Council • Program Partner is State Farm

  7. Competitive Grant • Students develop teen driver safety campaigns that change how their schools and communities approach teenage driving. • Campaign must be Service-Learning Oriented • Campaign must be Unique • Campaign must be Implemented in the Students own Way

  8. What is Service-Learning • Integrating service with established curricula or learning objectives • IMPORTANT: Because service learning is a teaching strategy, it is important to distinguish it from related, often extra-curricular activities.

  10. Blackfoot/Bingham County Youth Coalition Project Ignition 2005 Use a variety of projects designed to draw the attention of students to the danger of driving to include • Driving while distracted • Driving or riding without a seatbelt • Driving while under the influence

Blackfoot/Bingham County Youth Coalition Project Ignition 2005 Use a variety of projects designed to draw the attention of students to the danger of driving to include • Encourage seatbelt usage though positive re-enforcement. • Utilize scenario based learning that would have a long lasting impact on students. • Develop projects that will allow students hands on opportunities to learn first hand how these issues effect drivers.

Seatbelt Usage through Positive Re-Enforcement • Initial seatbelt survey at all high schools. • Random days over four months selected. • Observers monitored those wearing seatbelt. • Marking cars for seatbelt compliance. • Small rewards throughout four months. • Large reward for school with most seatbelt compliance.

Distracted Driving • Use of Driving simulators Basic gaming simulators X-Box with standard racing program Pre-determined, basic driving course • Non-Competitive Not a RACE Rules; Complete two laps driving a safely as possible. You do not have to drive fast this is not a race. Complete the course in the shortest time possible.

  21. Distracted Driving • On 2nd simulation drivers are distracted • Must unwrap and eat a candy car • Must locate a date on school calendar • Must locate and answer a cell phone placed closely to them • Must drive with loud music or friends talking • May include Fatal Vision Goggles

  23. Results of Simulations • Short pre-test survey • Short post-test survey • Out of 10 how much more likely are you to be involved in a traffic accident while being distracted? • List the #1 distraction inside a vehicle while you are driving.

  26. Long Term Issues • Learning can not be a one time, short term program. • Must be long term learning process. • Talking with young people about remembering what they have learned, not just in driving programs.
