  1. Sample Storyboard for “… Once more, let me implore you to return. No? Then I must positively leave you…” The Amontillado?!

  2. Shot 1 • Textual Evidence: A moment more and I had fettered him to the granite. In its surface were two iron staples, distant from each other about two feet, horizontally. From one of these depended a short chain, from the other a padlock. Throwing the links about his waist, it was but the work of a few seconds to secure it. • Desired effect of shot: This shot highlights the relationship between Fortunato and Montresor as Montresor works to quickly chains Fortunato to the wall. • Cinematic Techniques Used: • Shots and Framing: two shot • Lighting: low key on the setting, side lighting on Montresor’s face • Sound: diagetic sound (the ratting of the chain, Montresor breathing heavily as he works to quickly tie Fortunato to the wall) nondiagetic sound (suspenseful music)

Shot 2 • Textual Evidence: He was too much astounded to resist. • Desired effect of shot: This shot of Fortunato’s face highlights his facial expression and demonstrates that he is confused, or “astounded,” as to what is taking place. Also highlighted is his position of weakness in relation to Montresor. • Techniques Used: • Shots and Framing: close-up • Lighting: low key on the setting • Camera Movement: slow zoom into Fortunato’s face from previous shot • Camera Angle: high angle • Sound: diagetic (the ratting of the chain, Montresor breathing heavily as he works to quickly tie Fortunato to the wall) nondiagetic (suspenseful music reaches its peak)

  4. Shot 3 • Textual Evidence: “Pass your hand,” I said, “over the wall; you cannot help feeling the nitre. Indeed it is very damp. Once more let me implore you to return. No? Then I must positively leave you. But I must first render you all the little attentions in my power.” • Desired effect of shot: This shot emphasizes the power relationship that the two characters experience at this point (Montresor in a state of power over Fortunato). The character’s facial expressions relate directly to the dialogue being spoken by Montresor as he taunts Fortunato. • Techniques Used: • Shots and Framing: two shot • Lighting: low key on the setting, side lighting on Montresor’s face, front lighting on Fortunato • Sound: diagetic sound(dialogue: Montresor speaking), nondiagetic sound (suspenseful music slowly silencing) “… Once more, let me implore you to return. Shot 4 • Textual Evidence: “The Amontillado!” ejaculated my friend, not yet recovered from his astonishment. • Desired effect of shot: This shot emphasizes Fortunato’s response and state of confusion after having been tied to the wall by his “friend,” Montresor. He has yet to realize what is happening and still thinks that the Amontillado is to come. • Techniques Used: • Shots and Framing: medium shot • Lighting: low key on the setting, front lighting on Fortunato • Editing Technique: cut to Fortunato’s face from previous shot • Camera Angle: high angle • Sound: diagetic (Fortunato speaking, his voice trembling from confusion and fear) The Amontillado?!

IMAG E Desired effect of shot: explain what it is (the effect) that you are trying to convey in your shot as it relates to the textual evidence. This is where you show what you know about the setting, the characters, their actions, thoughts and interactions with others – be specific! Cinematic Techniques Used: identify which techniques you used and be prepared to verbally explain/defend your choices and how they influence the audience’s understanding of the story.
