  2. Do words always mean the same thing? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZ3LE5hD96A As we watch the video, reflect on what you see. What is the video saying? How can you apply this to literature? How can you apply this to every day life? (Your conversations with your friends, family? When you watch tv, read things online, etc?)
  3. Denotation – Denotation refers to the actual intended meaning/definition of a word. Connotation – Connotation refers to the suggested word meaning that surround the word. It is the feelings behind the word. Example – Hate means a strong dislike for something, but there are negative feelings associated with the word. You may say you hate to eat watermelon, but there is also a suggestion that goes beyond just not wanting to eat it that includes negative feelings and sets a tone to the message.

  11. Practice For each word pair, describe the differences in connotations. You may use words, phrases, images to describe these differences. Some of the differences may be very subtle, so use a dictionary if you need a more precise definition.
