Dangerous Duo 4-ESS3.B (4-ESS3-2) A variety of hazards result from natural processes. Humans cannot eliminate the hazards but can take steps to reduce their impacts. 5-ESS3.C (5-ESS3-1)Human Impacts on Earths Systems. Human activities in agriculture industry and everyday live have had major effects on land. But individuals and communities are doing things to help protect the earth’s resources and environments. MS ESS2.D (MS ESS2-5) Weather and Climate. Because these patterns are so complex, weather can only be predicted probabilistically. Summarizing and Note Taking To effectively summarize, students must delete some information, substitute some information and keep some information.
Non-Linguistic Representations Non-linguistic representations should elaborate on the pre-existing knowledge or the newly introduced knowledge. • A variety of activities to produce non-linguistic representations should be used. • Creating Graphic Representations • Making Physical Models • Generating Mental Pictures • Drawing Pictures and Pictographs • Engaging in Kinesthetic Activities
Generating and Testing Hypotheses Hypotheses generation and testing can be approached in a more inductive or deductive manner. Inductive-Use general rules to make a prediction about a specific event. Deductive-Specific pieces of information lead to general conclusion
Identify Similaritiesand Differences Presenting students with explicit guidance in identifying similarities and differences enhances students’ understanding of ability to use knowledge
Setting Objectives and Providing Feedback Students should be encouraged to personalize the teacher’s goals, adapting them to their personal needs and desires. Students can effectively provide some of their own feedback. Non-authoritative feedback produces significant gain.
Cooperative Learning Cooperative learning should be applied consistently and systematically, yet not overused. Organizing groups based on ability should be done sparingly.
Cues, Questions and Advance Organizers Cues, questions and advanced organizers should focus on what is important, rather than what is unusual. Daily Curriculum Available
Reinforcing Efforts and Providing Recognition Reward is most effective when it is contingent on the attainment of some standard of performance.
Homework and Practice The amount of homework should vary from elementary, to middle, to high school. Parent involvement in homework should be kept at a minimum.
