  4. Europeans Grab Territory • Geopolitics – An interest in or taking of land for its strategic location or products. • Ottoman empire controlled access to sea trade routes. • A weakened Ottoman empire encouraged Europeans to begin expanding into Ottoman land.

Crimean War • Russia seeks a warm weather port on the Black Sea. • In 1853 Russia wages war with the Ottomans for control of the Crimea Peninsula on the Black Sea. • France and Britain join the Ottomans to prevent Russia from gaining too much land. • France and Britain see firsthand how weak the Ottoman Empire is becoming.

Egypt Modernizes • Egyptian leaders seek to modernize Egypt to prevent it from weakening like the Ottomans. • Reforms include improved irrigation systems, growing cash crops like cotton, and the creation of the Suez Canal, which connected the Mediterranean with the Red Sea. • These reforms cost LOTS of money!

  7. Britain Takes Control of Egypt • Egypt’s reforms put them $450 million in debt to European banks. • They can’t pay, so Britain insists on taking financial control of the Suez Canal. • By 1882, the British completely occupy Egypt.
