  1. Voivodeship Inspectorate of Environmental Protection in Szczecinwww.wios.szczecin.pl - ASSESSMENT OF AIR QUALITY IN SZCZECIN AGGLOMERATION-

  2. ASSESSMENT OF AMBIENT AIR QUALITY IN LINE WITH REQUIREMENT OF UE DIRECTIVES: • FRAME DIRECTIVE96/62/EC ON AMBIENT AIR QUALITY ASSESSMENT AND MANAGEMENT • DAUGHTER DIRECTIVES: • 1999/30/EC – RELATING TO SULPHUR DIOXIDE, NITROGEN DIOXIDE AND OXIDES, PARTICULATE MATTER AND LEAD IN AMBIENT AIR, • 2000/69/EC – RELATING TOBENZENE AND CARBON MONOXIDE IN AMBIENT AIR, • 2002/2/EC – RELATING TOOZONE IN AMBIENT AIR, • 2004/107/EC - RELATING TOPOLYCYCLIC AROMATIC HYDROCARBONS AND HEAVY METALS: ARSENIC, CADMIUM, NICKEL AND MERCURY.

  3. Designating zones and agglomerations PRELIMINARY ASSESSMENT OF AMBIENT AIR QUALITY (AAQ) / 2001 Requirement of the daughter directives 1999/30/EC, 2000/69/EC, 2002/2/EC Number of inhabitants Ambient air quality Assessment of AAQ in zones and agglomerations Number of measuring sites

  4. PRELIMINARY ASSESSMENT OF AMBIENT AIR QUALITY - AGGLOMERATIONS AND ZONES IN WEST POMERANIAN VOIVODESHIP: • 1 agglomeration - Szczecin (Number of inhabitants: 414 000) • 20 powiats (including cities: Koszalin and Świnoujście)

  5. PRELIMINARY ASSESSMENT OF AMBIENT AIR QUALITY– CRITERIONS AND POLLUTIONS : • PROTECTION OF HUMANS HEALTH: BENZENE (C6H6) NITROGEN DIOXIDE (NO2) SULFUR DIOXIDE (SO2) PARTICULATE MATTER PM10 LEAD (Pb) CARBON MONOXIDE (CO) OZONE (O3) • PROTECTION OF ECOSYSTEMS: SULFUR DIOXIDE (SO2) NITROGEN OXIDES(NOX) OZONE (O3)

  6. SYSTEM OF AIR QUALITY MONITORING, IN LINE WITH THE PRELIMINARY ASSESSMENT OF AIR QUALITY IN WEST POMERANIAN VOIVODESHIP,BASED ON: • AUTOMATIC AND MANUAL MEASUREMENTS; • INDICATIVE METHODS (PASSIVE MEASUREMENTS) • MODELLING OF THE DISTRIBUTION OF POLLUTANTS

  7. AIR QUALITY MONITORING NETWORK IN SZCZECIN(without passive measurement stations)

  8. Trend of ambient air quality in 2004SULFUR DIOXIDE (SO2) Limit value for the protection of ecosystems: 20 ug/m3

  9. Trend of ambient air quality in 2004NITROGEN DIOXIDE (NO2) Yearly mean concentration: 40 ug/m3

  10. Trend of ambient air quality in 2004PARTICULATE MATTER (PM10) Yearly mean concentration: 40 ug/m3

  11. Trend of ambient air quality in 2004 Sulfur dioxide (SO2) Carbon monoxide (CO) Benzene • Attention to : • Particulate matter • Nitrogen dioxide • Ozone Lead (Pb) Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) Particulate matter (PM10) Ozone

  12. PM10 PROBLEMS IN SZCZECIN AGGLOMERATION MODELLING OF THE DISTRIBUTION OF POLLUTANTS PM10 – 24-HOUR MEAN CONCENTRATION PM10 – YEARLY MEAN CONCENTRATION

  13. PM10 EXCEEDANCES OF LIMIT VALUES Max. 35 days/year with daily mean concentrations above 50 ug/m3 2004 24-hour mean concentration and 36max. 24-hour mean concentration (Traffic station no exist) LV = 50 ug/m3 LV + MT = 55 ug/m3 2005 24-hour mean concentration and 36max. 24-hour mean concentration LV = 50 ug/m3 SZCZECIN_RODŁA SQUARE (THE TRAFFIC STATION) 42 days with daily mean concentrations above 50 ug/m3

  14. Conclusions: PM10 in Szczecin Agglomeration In 2004 less than 35 exceedance of PM10 limit values + margins of tolerance → no program necessary In 2005 margins of tolerance for PM10 no exist • In 2005: at Traffic station 42 days with daily mean concentrations above 50 ug/m3 → programs and action plans could be necessary for the near traffic sites

  15. NO2 in Szczecin agglomeration : HOT SPOTS Szczecin, Brama Portowa Szczecin, Jagiellońska str.

  16. NO2 IN SZCZECIN AGGLOMERATION:

  17. Conclusions: NO2 in Szczecin Agglomeration  no exceedance of NO2 limit values + margins of tolerance since 2002 → actually no program necessary exceedance of the NO2-limit value is possible (see Szczecin Hot Spots) → programs and action plans could be necessary in future further investigations at near traffic sites

  18. PASSIVE MEASURMENTSOFBENZENE – YEARLY MEAN CONCENTRATION IN 2004Limit Value (LV): 5 ug/m3
