  2. Rome and Christianity • For most of it’s history, Rome practiced religious tolerance • As a result, there was great religious diversity • Christianity emerges as one of these many religions

  3. Rome and Christianity • Jesus of Nazareth • Said to be descendent of King David of Israel • Born and raised a Jew, practiced Judaism • Chose 12 apostles (followers) to help spread his message and teachings

  4. Rome and Christianity • Jesus of Nazareth (cont’d) • Said to have performed miracles • Called himself the “Son of God” • Many believed him to be the Jewish Messiah • Viewed by some as a threat • Executed by crucifixion

  6. Rome and Christianity • Rome became intolerant of Christianity • Saw as potential threat why? • Question of loyalty • Many killed for their beliefs (martyrs) • But Christianity continued to spread

  7. Rome and Christianity • Edict of Milan (313 AD) • Freedom of worship • Issued by Emperor Constantine • Eventually converted • Emperor Theodosius later made it the official religion
