Book review • In the young adult fantasy novel Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor, 17-year-old Karou pursues her interest in art at a Prague boarding school as she tries to unravel the mystery of her heritage. Tattooed and blue-haired, Karou chooses a collection of frightening creatures as inspiration for her drawings--but the monsters are very real. Raised by a being called Brimstone, Karou fulfills her family duties--including the retrieval of human teeth--without fully understanding her place in her grotesque family tree. While on an assignment for Brimstone, Karou meets an angel, Akiva, one of the many heavenly beings who have come to earth. Akiva may have the answers Karou seeks, but the information will forever change the teenager's world.
