Urgent restoration is required to the living and community space • £2.7 million is needed to: • install a lift to improve access to community space • install eco insulation which will extend the guest season by 25% • install a renewable energy heating system, in partnership with Historic Environment Scotland and Iona Renewables • improve lighting in communal spaces to create a safer environment • re-fit bedrooms, removing bunks so that rooms are single or twin occupancy • upgrade and improve all utility services • re-arrange office space to support partnership working

Participating as Neighbours Working with Iona Renewables Iona Abbey is part of the islands plans for 100% renewable energy Developing the Abbey as a learning resource with community space for art, music, heritage and hospitality activities Providing custom for local shops and hotels, with fishing and boat trips serving visitors and islanders. ‘life is good here’ Sustaining a fragile island economy

Iona Abbey, where work and worship shape the pattern of the day ‘Visitors share meals, engage in daily work and conversation and at the beginning and end of each day, gather for a service of worship in the re-built Benedictine Abbey Church’ 1,500 guests a year form inclusive communities with staff and volunteers Ecumenical, transformational relationships emerge Time to reflect on peace, justice and the integrity of creation

  7. Learning and caring travels beyond Iona Georgina volunteered on Iona, went on to university, worked with Glasgow Poverty Truth Commission. Sue is a Community Member caring for and counselling people in challenging situations Dora is a staff member who has campaigned for and built disabled toilets for schools in Uganda Transforming lives to change the world

Benefits increased access to living and community space extended season, develop programme, provide greater choice of work and worship develop volunteer training and accreditation placement opportunities for lay and ordained community development work strengthen business opportunities within local economy new opportunities for partnership working extend opportunities for urban communities, caring organisations and charities develop community spaces as a learning resource for primary schools realise the renewable energy scheme as part of Iona Abbey’s story and experience

Time-line for appeal 2017 2018 April 2019 £1.4 million donated £1.5 millionto raise Phase 2: when funds available re-wiring and re-plumbing throughout insulating and re-fitting of bedrooms installation of geo-thermal heating system re-configure space in Refectory Phase 1: Dec ’17- May’18 Installation of lift with new entrance area, space to welcome guests and adjustments to common room Reconfiguration of office spaces to prepare for re-fitting bedrooms Support for developments in library working with Iona Cathedral Trust Safe guarding life in community Developing a power-house of learning and reflection
