History • The Business Immigrant Mentorship Program • 2009 (Pilot Year) - Fredericton Chamber of Commerce • 2010 – Saint John – Enterprise Saint John • 2010 - Moncton – Chamber of Commerce • 2011 – Bathurst – Chamber of Commerce • 2012 – Edmundston – Chamber of Commerce • 2012 – Moncton - Enterprise Moncton • Innovative Program, first of its kind in Canada sponsored by the Province of NB to support immigrant investors with Business Start Up guidance and support.
Program Outline • Matching immigrant entrepreneurs with business professionals who volunteer for six month cohorts • Mentors are recruited to coach, assist and guide immigrant mentees through the processes of doing business in Canada • Cohorts consist of one on one mentor assistance, comprehensive business training, involvement with Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise Network activities, networking and training. • Introduction to the mentee of the Canadian Business Principals – Support with building a network and introduction of business basics.
Launching Cohorts • Each cohort is launched with mentoring group and local officials in attendance • Media release issued • Kick off of six month cohort start • Followed by short reception • Mentors and mentees recognized Cohort Launch Fredericton City Hall Two launches per year
Orientation Session • Prior to the start of the actual cohort all registered and interested newcomers will attend a 3 day orientation session • Classroom setting instruction • Introduction of the program – Requirements and Responsibilities • Introduction to Provincial Business Guides (3) • Determining if the program is suited to the current needs of the newcomer • Recognition of mentees desire to invest in business as opposed to seeking employment. Business Training • Doing Business in New Brunswick – Mentees will attend classroom training sessions over the six month cohort Topics Include • The Canadian Business System • Business Culture and Etiquette • Networking • Credit Rating – Importance • Professional Services – Accounting, Banking, Law • Operational Requirements • Zoning – where can I put the business • Workers Compensation • Licenses and Permits • The importance of a Canadian style business plan • Creation of a Canadian Style business plan

Cultural Competency Training • Cultural training a key component to the six month cohort • Full day training session with mentees and mentors • In Fredericton offered by the Multicultural Association Cultural Diversity & Understanding Cross Cultural Communication Styles

Completion Celebration • At the end of each year a celebration is held in recognition of mentee program completion and volunteer mentor recognition. Mentees are awarded certificates of completion for Business Training and Program Participation
Mentor Appreciation • Mentors offer time as volunteers, because of this giving back is very important. • Featuring Mentors and their bios, businesses on Social Media • Offering promotional publicity • Meet the Mentor Publication • Start Up Canada recently recognized mentors from the BIMP group as top ten national winner for Mentor Rockstar Challenge.
