  11. SUNSET BOULEVARD NOTES Now that we’ve gone over some important scenes, let’s practice writing!  Take notes on the following slides…

  12. SUNSET BOULEVARD NOTES When trying to prove something, whether when arguing verbally or writing, the best format to do so is the following: • Topic statement: Make a statement about what you will prove • Explanation: Explain whatever you feel needs further expansion in your first statement • Evidence: Prove what you say with specific data, quotes or a very specific summary • Explanation: Explain exactly what your evidence proves. • Evidence: One piece of evidence is not enough; always give a second specific piece of evidence to prove your point. • Explanation: Explain what your evidence proves • Conclude: Explain the importance of what you proved..

  13. SUNSET BOULEVARD Here’s an example of the format: In the movie Sunset Boulevard, long shots are effectively used to help the audience understand the grandiose and often frightening setting. Long shots are camera shots in which human figures are visible, but the setting dominates the audience’s view, helping the viewers to comprehend the location and details of the setting better. We see the impact of long shots early in the film when the main character– Joe Gillis– walks up stairs to find a huge, apparently empty mansion in front of him. When the audience sees this mansion, it reveals just how small Joe Gillis is in comparison to what he has just stumbled across. Furthermore, the great size of the mansion creates an intimidating feeling for even the audience, as we are left wondering who could possibly reside in such a large, but seemingly empty place. Later in the film, we see another long shot from inside the mansion, but this time, we see a butler escorting a man into the mansion from afar; the man is carrying a small coffin and the lighting is very low. This long shot is important because it helps the audience to understand the hugeness of the mansion, the emptiness of the mansion, and the seemingly eerie events that happen within this huge mansion. The lighting also helps create a mysterious, uneasy feeling about the strange events occurring within this strange place. Without these long shots, the audience would have little understanding of how huge the mansion (the main setting) is, how empty this place seems and how small the characters are in comparison to this mansion– all of which is important in understanding the main ideas in the film.

  14. SUNSET BOULEVARD NOTES Now YOU try! Using the format given to you, write a paragraph proving one of the following: • The effect of low-key lighting in Sunset Boulevard • The effect of high-key lighting in Sunset Boulevard • The importance of the composition (cluttered scenes and empty scenes) in Sunset Boulevard • The importance of internal framing in Sunset Boulevard For your “EVIDENCE” you want to summarize specific scenes (in detail) from the movie that reveal that type of lighting, composition or framing.
