WHAT IS PALM OS? • It is a mobile operating system. • Its been used in smart phones, wrist watches, handheld game consoles, GPS devices etc. • Provides a software platform for any handheld PDAs made by Palm Inc. • Designed to fit palm size device of specific size and specific display size. • It uses TCP/IP network access.

  3. Back to the 90’s • Developed by Jeff Hawkins at Palm Computing Inc. • Designed in 1996 • Six versions were designed: • Palm OS 1.0(1996) • Palm OS 2.0(March 10 1997) • Palm OS 3.0(March 9 1998) • Palm OS 4.0(March 19 2001) • Palm OS 5(June 2002) • Palm OS Cobalt (Feb 10 2004)

Palm OS 1.0 • Could not differentiate between RAM and file storage system • Supported 160x160 monochrome output display • Input generated through Graffiti handwriting reorganization system or virtual keyboard (optional) • Supported data synchronization to another Pc through its HotSync technology • Features • Classic PIM applications Address • Date Book • Memo Pad • To Do List • Calculator • Security tool

Palm OS 3.0 • Added • Infrared (IrDA) • Enhanced font support • Released 4 different versions with different features • Palm OS 3.1 – minor features like new HotSync support • Palm OS 3.2 – Web Clipping support • Palm OS 3.3 – faster HotSync speed and infrared hotsyncing • Palm OS 3.5 – native 8-bit color support, many convenience features

  7. Palm OS 4.0 • Added • External file system access (SD card) • Support USB • Mobile Internet kit • 16 bit color screens and different time zone. • Many other applications (LED blinking, vibration, sound) • UI enhancements

Palm OS 5 • Supports ARM(32 bit Advanced RISC Machine) devices • Supports high density 320 x 320 screens with full sound playback and record API • Released 4 versions: • 5.2 - supports 480x320 resolutions and introduces a new handwriting input system called Graffiti 2. • Palm OS 5.3 Simplified Chinese Edition - supports Simplified Chinese, adds support for QVGA resolutions, and API for virtual Graffiti • Palm OS Garnet (5.4) - provides support for multiple screen resolutions, ranging from 160x160 to 480x320, updated Bluetooth libraries. • Garnet OS 5.5 – designed mostly for Garnet VM virtual machine.

Android vs. Palm OS Android Palm OS • Developed by Google • Designing since 2005 • Used by Samsung, HTC, etc • Most of the features are same but since it was designed in 2005 many features like supporting 3D graphics were added. • The market share is around 25.5% • Developed by Palm Inc. • Designing since 1996 • Used by HP • Features are almost the same but since it began designing from long back many new tech features were not added. • The market share is pretty less.
