  1. Bellwork December 14th: Yesterday, we read the poem “Still I Rise” in which Maya Angelou talks about overcoming obstacles in her life. Write about an obstacle you have faced in your life? How did the experience change you? How did you overcome this obstacle? 7-10 sentences.

  2. Goal for today: • 1. That you understand how to write a research paper proposal. • 2. That you write most if not all of your rough draft in class today.

  3. How to write a Proposal • Let’s walk through the steps of writing a research paper proposal. This will be what you turn in for the written part of your LAST portfolio piece of the year! • Follow along and make notes on your handout while we talk about each step.

  4. Step One: Formatting your paper • One inch margins around the page • Single spaced • No indentation of paragraphs

  5. Start with the Basics: • Date : ( today’s date) • To: ( Your teacher’s name) • From: (your full name and email address) • Subject of paper: ( describe the broad topic of your paper here )

  6. Example ( The basics): • Date: December 12, 2012 • To: Mrs. Cross; Mrs. Caza • From: Jane Student ; jstudent@gaggle.mvusd.net • Subject of my paper: The effects of edited images on young women

  7. Why writing about this topic will be beneficial to me: • Write why you are specifically interested in this topic and how it will benefit advancing your education. • You must have an active interest in your subject (amongst other things) otherwise you will struggle writing your paper and your statements will lack conviction. • Make sure to communicate your passion for the subject of your paper in this part of the proposal.

  8. Example (Why): • This topic is of interest to me because I subscribe to magazines that contain Photoshop enhanced images. I have always felt that these images of the “perfect woman” were unrealistic. Most girls I know do not look like the images portrayed in the magazines we read. This has a negative effect on young girls and body image. As a more informed viewer of these images, I will be able to understand their effects on me and my friends. This will allow me to distinguish between illusion and reality when it comes to my own body image. I think it is time we stopped placing unfair expectations on young girls who see these images

  9. My Research Question: • [Keep in mind that your question should only be a sentence or two long and it should be specific. • Often, your paper will be more effective if it answers a how or why question instead of a who, what, when or where question. • Take the topic and form a question you want to answer about it here.

  10. Example ( Question): • How does the editing of celebrity images affect the body image of young teen women?

  11. Approach to the subject of my paper: • Explain possible subtopics for your paper and areas of focus. • Go into as much detail here as you can at this point in time to prove that you do have a plan of attack for this paper.

  12. Example ( approach): • The possible areas of focus for this paper include: the effect of edited images on the female self-image, the way women are viewed in society based on these images, and what lengths women will go to in order to reach these expectations. I will discuss each of these in individual body paragraphs in my paper.

  13. Intended audience: • Selecting a specific intended audience will define the level of education and biases of your readers. It will alter the information you include in your research paper and how you present your viewpoints. • When selecting an audience, target a demographic that has your level of education, but doesn’t necessarily have your background. • While organizing your thoughts, think to yourself, “What do I need to explain to this audience to help them understand this topic?” Explain who your intended audience is and what they need to know in order to understand your topic.

  14. Example ( audience): • My audience will be other high school girls who can relate to this issue and are affected everyday by it. This audience will need to be informed about how popular magazines and advertisements edit most images of women they contain.

  15. Kinds of sources I will use and why they will benefit my paper: • [Teachers like to see a balanced approach to selecting types of sources for your paper. If you are struggling finding good sources for your research paper while creating your proposal, it’s a good indication you should pick another topic. • When you state the types of sources you will be using, include how these sources will strengthen your paper. • Explain how you will find sources, what kind of sources you will use, and how you will ensure that the sources are reputable]

  16. Example ( sources) : • I will look for specific cases of young women severely affected by a distorted view of the female body as a result of magazine images. I will also look for celebrity endorsements in support of the cause. I will use the online library catalogue to find print sources and the list of online websites suggested by my teacher for non-print resources on my topic. By using this list and catalogue I can ensure that my sources are of high quality. I will use an actual magazine which contains photo shopped images as support for my research. I will attempt to locate the original images as well. I will also look for documented issues in article form that talk about this issue.

  17. Tentative List of References: • Your teacher will often give you a minimum number of references for you to include as a tentative list of references for your research paper proposal. • Your teachers want to see if you know how to select appropriate sources within your topic. List them here.

  18. Example (sources) : • http://womensheath.gov/body-image/kids/index.html • http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/19/health/teenage-boys-worried-about-body-image-take-risks.html • http://womenshealth.gov/body-image/eating-disorders/index.html • http://www.foxnews.com/health/2012/11/06/friendssharebodyimagewoes

  19. Look at the handout : • The handout displays the correct format for your completed proposal . • Begin writing your rough draft proposal now in class.
