  4. Lesson 5 overview • Content covered in the lesson: • Comparing portrayals of suffragettes and suffragists in sources. • Why do interpretations differ? Use and selection of sources. • Mapping suffrage campaigners in 1911: University of Warwick. • Activity: Interrogating the database of suffrage campaigners.

  5. What’s the story of the women’s suffrage campaign? Recap Activity: Comparing portrayals of suffragettes and suffragists In the traditional story, the suffragists were… In the traditional story, the suffragettes were… How do stories of working-class campaigners like Selina Cooper complicate the traditional story?

  6. Why do interpretations differ? One reason why such different stories have been told about the women’s suffrage campaign is that different sources have been used to find out about the campaign. The suffragettes George Dangerfield Jill Liddington and Jill Norris Q: How does your source help to challenge, complicate or add to the traditional story of the suffrage campaign? Q:What sources of evidence did each story depend on?

  7. Activity 1: Mapping those that boycotted the 1911 census Today, historians are still uncovering new sources of evidence about the suffrage campaign. One project, led by historians Sarah Richardson and Tara Morton at the University of Warwick, is mapping the locations of as many suffrage campaigners as possible across England at the height of the movement in 1911, using data from the 1911 census boycott and other sources. Through it, they are uncovering new stories of local campaigning and adding to our knowledge of the suffrage story. But now it’s your turn to add to the story…

  8. Activity 2: Interrogating the database of suffrage campaigners In 2018, a group of history teachers worked with Dr Tara Morton to create a database of suffrage campaigners. This offers us a new source of information about who the campaigners were and how they won the vote. Your job is to use it to help tell a more complicated story.

  9. What’s the story of the women’s suffrage campaign? Plenary 1: Comparing contrasting portrayals Your challenge is to try to work out how these stories of how women won the vote differ and why. • Tasks: • Interrogate the database of suffrage campaigners. • Add a new row to your table – ‘big data’ – and complete using information from the database.

  10. What’s the story of the women’s suffrage campaign? Plenary 2: What story does the database tell? How does this complicate the story of the women’s suffrage campaign?
