Amazon HQ2Local Impacts • Anticipate an addition of between 3,000 and 3,500 households to Prince William by 2030 as a result of HQ2 direct, indirect, and induced jobs • Shortage of housing in the metro area has created fear of increased unaffordability with HQ2. PWC will remain more affordable option (Fall 2017 median sale price, Long & Foster): • Arlington: $555,000 • Alexandria: $537,000 • Fairfax: $479,950 • PWC: $355,000

Amazon HQ2Local Impacts • Share of PWC residents commuting to Arlington and Alexandria will gradually rise, creating increased demand for mass transit options. • Without taking a broad economic slowdown into account, median sale prices of homes in PWC will gradually rise to above $400,000 in the next decade. • Spin-off tech-related companies jobs locating in Fairfax and Prince William. • Opportunities to bolster computer science and tech skills into PWC schools and enhance possibilities for young population settling in NoVA post-college. • COG 9.1 projections and overall projections that add just over 100,000 people to Prince William by 2040 are more likely to hold true. There is an increased need to plan for more multi-unit, mixed-use development near public transit.

  18. 2020 CENSUS • https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/decennial-census/2020-census/research-testing/communications-research/2020_cbams.html • Less than 7 in 10 households plan to participate in the 2020 Census. • Much of the public has low levels of familiarity with and knowledge of the census. There is a need to help people understand the purpose, content, and process of the census could increase their participation. • The largest barriers to participation in the 2020 Census were: • Concerns about data confidentiality. • Concerns about repercussions from participating. • Pessimism about the efficacy of participating. • Distrust in all levels of government.

  19. 2020 CENSUS • Many householders felt that “funding for public services,” such as fire and police departments, hospitals, and roads and highways, was the most important reason to participate in the census. Those involved in the census awareness campaign must tie participation in the census to community funding – which leads to a better future for younger generations. There is a need for messaging that provides specific and concrete examples of how the census benefits local communities. Less than half of respondents knew that the census was used to determine community funding. • People need to understand • 1) The purpose of the census • 2) Its value to their community • 3) The process for participation. • Encouragement from trusted voices in the community can successfully increase participation
