  2. The First Woman In Space • In 1963, Valentina Tereshkova, from the Soviet Union, was the first woman in space. • She was an engineer, and was in space for about 3 days.

  3. First American Woman In Space • Sally Ride was the first American woman to go into space. • She was in space for about 14 days on the Space Shuttle Challenger . • Sally Ride was also the first women to use the robot arm in space.

  4. The First Female Space Station Commander • The first female space station commander was Peggy Witson. • Peggy’s first space mission was in 2002. She then became commander in 2007, on her second mission.

  5. Teacher (Almost) In Space • Christa McAuliffe was going to be the first teacher in space. • She taught in New Hampshire, and was chosen over 11,000 applicants to go into space. • Unfortunately, the Challenger disintegrated only 73 seconds after being launched.

  6. The First Woman Space Pilot • Eileen Collins was the first woman space shuttle pilot. • She flew the Discovery in 1995.

  7. Longest Single Woman Flight • Sunita Williams holds the record for the longest single space flight for a woman. • She was in space for 195 days. • Sunita was a member of the Expedition-14 crew.

Current Women In Space • Currently, there are 4 women in space; this is a new record! • The Discovery launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, carrying needed supplies to the International Space Station. • The four women are Dorothy Metcalf-Lindenburger, Stephanie Wilson, Naoko Yamazaki, and Tracy Caldwell Dyson.
