Marine Science Research in Puget Sound for Community College STEM Students

This program aims to provide authentic research experiences for a diverse group of community college students in the Puget Sound area. Students will participate in year-long research projects, with sessions scheduled between quarters and online activities in between. The program also fosters a community of student researchers and connects them to the local research community.

  2. Program Goals: • Create authentic research experiences for a diverse group of community college students • Accommodate the busy lives and work schedules of community college students • Foster a community of student researchers • Connect student researchers to their local research community

  3. Key Elements: • Students selected from 16 regional community colleges • Unlike a conventional REU, students participate in year-long research projects • 3-5 day sessions scheduled between quarters • Online activities between sessions • Student-driven, collaborative research projects

  5. Key Elements: • Funding! • NSF support provides stipends for students ($3600), funds for supplies & boat time, and stipends for PI, Co-PI, and consultants.

  6. Progress and Next Steps: • In Year One; serving six students on two projects. • Program will serve eight students in year two, and ten in year three.
