Additional Sophomore Class Options • Science • Basic Life Science/Biology • Science 1/Chemistry/ Honors Chemistry • Anatomy/Physiology • Language Other Than English (Foreign Language) • Spanish • French • Additional Electives (1-3 depending on over all schedule) • Social Science Electives • English Electives • Visual & Performing Art (VPA) Electives • Industrial Technology Electives • ROP Electives (minimum age 16) • Leadership • Inside Work Experience (IWE) • 6/7 Periods • 6 classes are required some student opt for 7 classes but this is not guaranteed. • Extra Curricular Activities • AHS offers a variety of sports, clubs and volunteer opportunities. • Look for summer opportunities: Job, internship, or volunteer opportunities.

AHS Graduation Requirements • Subject Requirements • 4 years English • Can be a combination of English, ELD and Read 180 • 3 years Mathematics • 1 year must be Algebra 1 • 2 years Science • 1 year of life science and 1 year of physical science • 3 years Social Studies • Modern World, US History, Civics / Economics • Foreign Language or Fine Arts • 1 year (taken in either area) • 2 years Physical Education • One must be PE 9

  5. AHS Graduation Requirements Continued • Credit Requirements • 230 credits is the minimum and these are composed of required subjects and elective subjects. Once you have met the minimum subject requirements additional classes will count as electives. • At the end of your Freshman year you will need a minimum of 60 credits. • A student must be enrolled in 6 classes (60 credits) per year. • California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) • The test is taken in 10th grade and students must pass both the English and Math portions. • If a student does not pass either or both of the test sections they will have additional opportunities to pass. • Once a student has passed one or both of the test sections they will not have to take it again.

  7. Putting Graduation And College Eligibility Together • In order to graduate AND be A-G eligible you just have to make sure you do the following: • Make sure that ALLof your subject requirements meet the A-G list. In other words, they are college prep classes. • Make sure to take 1 year of a college prep Visual/Performing Art (VPA) AND at least 2 years of a language other than English. • Take three years of math up to Algebra 2/Trigonometry • Take at least 1 additional year of a college prep elective. • Earn all C- or better. A’s and B’s are best. • CSU’s require a minimum 2.0 academic GPA. • UC’s require a minimum 3.0 academic GPA. • In order to be competitive, take the most challenging classes you are capable while still earning a high GPA. • Honors, Pre-AP, Advance Placement-AP and/or DVC classes are all examples of possible challenging classes.

College Entrance Tests • PSAT • Take next October • Test sections: Critical reading, Math, Writing Skills • Take again in Junior year/Qualify for National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT) possibilities • Check YES-Student search services • ACT with Writing • Take spring Junior year • Test sections: English, Math, Reading, Science, Writing • Measures “What you know” • SAT • Take spring Junior year • Test sections: Critical reading, Math, Writing • Measures “How you know it” • SAT Subject tests • Offered in a variety of subject areas: history, literature, mathematics (Level 2 only), science or language other than English. • Starting with the fall class of 2012 the UC’s will no longer be requiring SAT subject tests. However, some private colleges do require SAT subject tests

College Search • Start researching this year • Start at the AHS counselor website: http://www.martinez.k12.ca.us/ahs/counseling/counseling.htm • Visit Campuses • In session • Take tours • Talk to students on campus • Visit college fairs • In April, St. Mary’s College offers one of the bay areas biggest college fairs. • Look for the right “fit” • Size • Location • Type and price • Major • Activities available • Your academic match (GPA, test scores, course pattern, etc)

Online Scheduling for School Year 2010-2011March 15 to March 26 • You will need: • A Copy of your transcript • Online scheduling Handout also found in the course catalog • Web Address: AHS Home Page: http://www.martinez.k12.ca.us/ahs • User Name: 10 Digit Identification Number---Found on transcript/Report Card • Password: Your birthday is your password (MMDDYY) • Course Catalog for 2010-2011 which is only available online • A completed course selection planning guide handout also found in the course catalog • It is recommended to complete the 4-year course planning guide found in the online course catalog • Parent/Guardian for Advice/Review • Changes To Locked Classes • Pre-AP English: Sign up as an additional class. We will remove Sophomore English from your schedule once the recommendation has been confirmed • Alternate Electives: • Be sure to provide alternate choice for each elective class you choose. If you do not we will. • Problems? Come to the Counseling Office or the Writing Center for help before the March 26 deadline. • Computers are available for student use at the Writing Center and the Library Media Center during school hours and immediately after school each day.
