WPG 1 Source Apportionment The work-package activities on particulate matter will be focused on two major activities, namely: i) a present state source apportionment of PM10 (PM 2.5) ii) a follow up source apportionment of PM10 after 2 years. The methodology to be used has developed and tested within the Integrated Krakow Project and is based upon exhaustive chemical and physical characterization of samples from ambient air and from major emission sources - combined with multivariate receptor modelling.   6. Winter 2007 Preliminary results: Wood burning: Levoglucosan analysis: Contribution of wood burning to PM ~ 10%-20% Further quantification with C14 Isotope. Winter campaign 2008 (Finished 22nd Feb.) 4th Daughter Directive. PAH, Cd, As, Ni. Limit values seem to be respected. POMI kick-off meeting 7 March, 2008

The Programme: Winter 2006/7: PM 10 sampling, 30-60 days, 10 stations٧ All year 2007: Source sampling, Chemical analysis ٧ Summer 2007:Ozone precursor VOCs 30-60 Days, 2 stations ٧ Winter 2007/8: Intensive campaign PM10/PM2.5 30days, 4 stations Sondrio, Lodi, Cantu, Milan. ٧(+ C14) All year 2008: Chemical analysis and modelling- Ongoing Winter 2008/9: PM 10 sampling, 30-60 days, 10 stations Proposal to be discussed: Focus on PM 2.5 + PM10 in Milan All year 2009: Chemical analysis and modelling POMI kick-off meeting 7 March, 2008

  12. 2) Support RL in the developments of new air quality assessment technologies and strategies: • Testing and development of new instrumentation and techniques, focusing on: • Evaluation of new sensors for continuous PM10/PM2.5 measurements with reduced sampling artefacts (e.g. TEOM-FDMS) • Semiconductor micro-sensors for gaseous pollutants • Potential use of remote sensing e.g. for emission inventories control 3) Impact of road transport on air pollution levels and on human exposure Measuring campaigns in urban hot spots, to be defined based on preliminary results obtained within the project. Integrated Assessment Objectives: • Develop methodologies for the integrated assessment of the Regional Plans for the Air Quality • To assist the regional tools for Air Quality • emission inventories (INEMAR) • AQ models • Collaboration with other Regions of Po Valley and other European groups POMI kick-off meeting 7 March, 2008

RIAT (I) The Regional Integrated Assessment Tool should be: • A tool to bring together data on pollutant sources (emission inventories), their respective contribution to atmospheric concentrations (S/R relationships) and human exposure, together with information on potential technological and other measures that may be used to reduce concentrations and their costs. • The RIAT will be built as a self-consistent IT tool, set-up in a modular way to facilitate further updates, flexible enough to be geographically versatile and user-friendly. It should be efficient in supporting the air quality decision making process. POMI kick-off meeting 7 March, 2008
