  2. Mathematical Association of America Committees The Mathematical Association of America is the largest professional society that focuses on undergraduate mathematics. Members include university, college, and high school teachers; pure and applied mathematicians; computer scientists; statisticians; and many others in academia, government, business, and industry. Mathematics faculty have served as: • Chair, SIGMAA TAHSM (special interest group of the MAA on Teaching Advanced High School Mathematics • Elected Board of Governors of the MAA Governor-at-Large for Secondary Teachers • Bureau of Indian Affairs/ Mathematical Association of America Strengthening Underrepresented Minority • Editorial Board for New Mathematical Library • Committee on the Mathematical Education of Teachers • Committee on the American Mathematics Competitions

  3. National Science Foundation The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency created by Congress in 1950 "to promote the progress of science; to advance the national health, prosperity, and welfare; to secure the national defense…" • Proposal reviewers for elementary, secondary, and informal instruction (3 members) • Advisory board to NSF-funded Leadership in Urban Mathematics Reform • Invited speaker, NSF Rethinking Precalculus Conference • Participated in the development of Dynamic Classroom Assessment, professional development materials (2 members)

National Academy of Science The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) is an honorific society of distinguished scholars engaged in scientific and engineering research, dedicated to the furtherance of science and technology and to their use for the general welfare.  • U.S. National Commission on Mathematics Instruction (2 terms) • National Research Council, Committee on Programs for Advanced Study of Math and Science in American High Schools • Invited speaker and panelist, Next Steps in Mathematics Professional Development, Grades 9-12 • Mathematical Sciences Education Board (MSEB)

International Activities – department members are also known/respected internationally • Invited Addresses in Germany, Spain, Canada, New Zealand, Hungary, Australia, Japan. • Invited Speaker, US-Japan SMT (Science, Math, Technology) Education Conference, San Francisco, CA • Invited Speaker, Teaching with Technology Institutes, Sydney and Melbourne, Australia • Organizer and Participant, 2nd Post ICME-9 US-Japan Seminar Yokohama, Japan • Local Organizer and Facilitator, 5-day Post ICME-9 US-Japan Seminar at NCSSM

  10. 9th International Conference on Mathematics Education (ICME-9) Makuhari, Japan Teaching for Mathematical Creativity. • As a lead author and presenter, NCSSM represented the US with colleagues from IMSA and the Governor’s School in Minnesota • Workshop for Teachers of the Mathematically Talented Teachers College at Columbia University. • NCSSM represented the best of U.S. mathematics education at this International Conference

Since 1995, pairs of NCSSM mathematics faculty have written 25 articles for the Everybody’s Problems section in Consortium. • These have been collected on a CD sold by COMAP along with MCM solutions. • During the past four years, 5 articles by NCSSM faculty have appeared on the AP Statistics web-page at AP Central • Department members are negotiating with the College Board to write 6 modeling investigations each year for publication on AP Central Website.

Other teaching opportunities • Taught an on-line statistics course for UCLA for the 2 years • Member of Duke’s faculty in the Master’s in the Arts of Teaching program • Adjunct Faculty NC State University • Technology • Ongoing consultation with Texas Instruments on development of new educational software and products

Other Committees and Panels • Member of expert panel to review curriculum and professional development plan for Discover Canyon School • Served on the UNC Minimum Course Requirements Mathematics Steering Committee • Served on the NCDPI Advisory Committee for the development of goals and objectives and the Advanced Functions and Modeling course and the Precalculus course of study in NC

  15. Lesson Study Activities • Lesson study* is a professional development process that Japanese teachers engage in to systematically examine their practice, with the goal of becoming more effective. This examination centers on teachers working collaboratively on a small number of “study lessons”. Working on these study lessons involves planning, teaching, observing, and critiquing the lessons. • Advisor to Charlotte Country Day School’s Lesson Study program • Served as the Outside Expert for DePaul University Lesson Study Program • Organizer and Participant, Park City Mathematics Institute • Summer Conference on Japanese Lesson Study • NCTM Regional Meeting, Denver, Doing Lesson Study: A High School Demonstration Lesson
