School Goals • Improving literacy • Build 21st century learners through making real life connections through everyday instruction • Helping our kids to not only become college and career ready but also helping them to understand what it means to be college and career ready. • Ensure we meet the needs of all of our students.

  6. Our daily classroom • Each day our schedule is full of exciting activities that are differentiated to meet your child’s individual needs. A few examples… • Use of Technology throughout curriculum • guided math and reading groups • math and literature centers • Independent Reading • literature discussions • projects/research • writing conferencing and editing • reading conferencing • Speaking and Listening • Presentations, projects, Good discussions • So much more….

MY EXPECTATIONS For Students • all students give 100% everyday and take responsibility for own education • Rights, Responsibility and Respect • Affirmations • hard work, teamwork • homework • try their very best • Habits of Mind, Group Norms • Use technology appropriately and enhance their understanding of the 21st century skills they will need in the real world For Parents • support your child in their academic endeavors • communicate with me if problems/concerns arise about their education or anything that would affect their education – Remember that YOU are their biggest advocate • encourage and support the habits of mind when working at home with your child • encourage your child to do 110% • Have fun learning and sharing with your child ( Please see parent involvement article)

  9. Group Norms expectations of the EKD magnet program as a whole. implemented in ALL magnet classrooms and is a county expectation at every magnet school becomes a habit and helps to shape students study and social habits

  10. Classroom Policies • Homework • due the day after it is assigned unless otherwise noted • neatly written or typed or sent through e-mail. If a student completes written work it should be in pencil only. • name and date is to be on all papers. • No more than 50 minutes of time each night!  • if not turned in the student will be expected to complete it at recess until finished. • Grading • students will be graded in all subjects, LA, Math, Social Studies, Science, Spelling, Writing and Self Development. • composed from homework, tests, projects, and in class work.

Policies • Parent Volunteers • welcome anytime • classroom visits ( please let me know if you are going to be coming in case of assessments, assemblies, etc) • Absences and being tardy • 2 days per day to make up work (excused absence) • school day begins at 8:10, they need to be in their seat ready for instruction and working on warm up

  13. Daily Schedule… • Math: 8:15-10:05 • Encore: 10:05-10:55 • Writing: 10:50-11:20 • Language Arts: 10:55-11:35 • Lunch: 11:35-12:05 • Recess: 12:05-12:30 – New 25 Minutes  • Language Arts: 12:30-1:40 • Social Studies/Science: 1:40-2:35 • Pack Up:2:35-2:40 • Dismissal: 2:40

  14. Field Trips • September 11-Outdoor School • Chaperones who were interested have already taken the required course. I have those names and will let you know ASAP. • Paperwork is due ASAP but by August 28 would be great! • October- Harpers Ferry National Park • May- Washington DC • Possible magnet field trip

  15. Other… All current magnet students must re-apply for the middle school magnet program. Applications are now available. All applications are due by december 3, 2012. Do not send them to me.
