  4. Real-world businesses represent different budget categories and places of employment. In 17 budget categories, students decide how to spend their income.

  5. The Truth Revealed Students get acquainted with their financial situation.

  6. The Big Search Housing Students research their spending and saving options.

  7. The Budget Puzzle Students make their choices and balance their budget.

  8. The Final Commitment Students put their budgets in practice and pay bills.

  9. Students track the value of a stock portfolio throughout the day. The consequences of using credit are stressed in a couple of ways as students make spending decisions.

  11. The Students’ Experience • Get a job and a family situation • Determine your Net Monthly Income (NMI) • Calculate guidelines and balance a budget • Make spending and saving decisions • Track the value of a stock portfolio • Pay bills

  12. Your Volunteer Experience • Provide guidance • Help with calculations and critical thinking • Monitor student progress • Facilitate student learning

  13. Four Main Parts • The visit day is broken into 4 stages • The Truth Revealed • The Big Search • The Budget Puzzle • The Final Commitment

  14. Volunteer Tools Bin of materials on each table in business Volunteer Manual Stage-by-stage instructions Answers for student worksheets Calculators for students to use Pencils with erasers Extra forms JA staff members will be on hand to help and answer questions all day.

  16. Student Portfolio • At work station in business • Students assigned business and account before arriving • Portfolio has 4 worksheets to complete • Also Life Situation ATM card and Job Description

The TruthRevealed • Students • get portfolio and job description • get Life Situation ATM card • Login with account number, PIN, and name • Calculate Net Monthly Income (NMI) • Calculate Budget Guidelines • You • Help with directions and keeping them on task • Help with math • Verify student work

  20. Log-in Screen • Student enters Account Number and PIN from ATM card • Enter name • Confirm that name is correct

  21. There is probably nothing wrong with computer. During some stages, nothing happens at some computers. Check with JAFP staff if any question! Computers showing this screen are resting. Please do not disturb them.

  22. Net Monthly Income (NMI) • Gross Annual Income and Monthly Taxes on Life Situation ATM card • Calculate Gross Monthly Income • Deduct Taxes • Add Lucky Chance Card (we’ll call these out) • Arrive at Net Monthly Income • Use Volunteer Manual on table to confirm 6

  23. Budget Guidelines • Use NMI to calculate budget guidelines • Minimum and Maximum payment only (Step 1 & 2) • No decisions yet (Step 3 – later) • Both sides • Use Volunteer Manual to check, if necessary 8 Round figures to nearest dollar!

  29. The Budget Puzzle • Students: • Make budget decisions based on options available • Try to balance to zero on paper • Get Midday stock prices • You • Help with decision making process • Help with math 8

  31. Each budget decision (Step 3) must fall between its minimum and maximum guidelines.

  32. The total retail amount of the Furniture and Home Improvement packages exceed student’s maximum guideline on Budget Guidelines (green) sheet. Student chooses payment between minimum and maximum guidelines 1 499 86 9d

  33. Housing & Mortgage (line #2) Housing Mortgage • Make your Housing choice Then, see how your Mortgage credit rating affects payment. Insert on Line #2 • Adjust payment based on credit rating: • If Excellent rating, deduct $10 from housing • If Average rating, add $0 • If Poor rating, add $10 to housing 9c

  35. The Final Commitment • Students • Make payments at all businesses • Get closing stock price from Edward Jones • Balance budget and complete Budget Checkout • Complete checkbook register • You • Help students make payments • Guide students through balancing problems

  36. Students Pay Bills! • Students go to businesses and enter payment on computers. • Enter Account Number and PIN • The amount MUST be between the minimum and maximum guidelines.

  38. Using Checkbook Register 1580 Enter net monthly income(NMI) in the box under Balance.

  39. Recording Payments 1580 Schnucks 300 1280 Busch Entertainment 50 1230 • Enter the business name and transaction amount. 2. Subtract Transaction Amount from Balance. Enter the new balance below.
