  1. Origins of the Universe

  2. Origins of the Universe • Three options are possible • Option 1- Someone made the Universe • Creationist theory- God made it • Big Bang Theory • Option 2- The Universe made itself • Option 3- The Universe has always been there Steady State Theory

  3. Big Bang Theory • Happened approximately 15 billion years ago • 13.7 billion years ago • Scientist believe our universe started as a hot, dense compressed mass a few millimeters across • The size of a pin head • This lasted for only a fraction of a second • Then there was a huge blast, explosion, or event causing the universe to expand at an incredible rate • Then we had the production of protons, neutrons, and electrons which lead to gases that could form primitive galaxies

  4. The Big Bang theory • Scientist credited- Georges Lemaitre in 1927 • Fred Hoyle coined the term “Big Bang “ in 1949 • Support came from Einstein’s theory of relativity • Also from Edwin Hubble in the 1920’s- he showed that stars were moving away faster than anticipated so it must be due to the expansion of the universe • Still believed today- current scientific theory

  5. Problems with the theory • Does not presume to talk about the initial creation of the universe • Only attempts to explain the expansion from a hot dense particle

  6. Creationist Theory • Who: God/Jesus • Time Frame- The writing of the Bible • Evidence-Chapters 1 and 2 of Genesis • Basic Principles- God created the universe in 7 days and determined “everything was good.” This is not meant to be a literal interpretation but a metamorphic for perfection. • Geologic landforms and sedimentary features are completely consistent with a worldwide flood as described in the Book of Genesis. • Enormous limestone formations, huge coal and oil formations, and immense underground salt layers are indicative of a worldwide flood—not slow and gradual processes over billions of years. Such features are satisfactorily explained by a worldwide flood and known geophysical and geochemical processes. • A worldwide flood as described in Genesis 6–8 is within the boundaries of known geophysics—see phase diagram in chapter 4 and Pangaea Flood Video at CreationScienceToday.com. • http://www.creationsciencetoday.com/

  7. Steady State Theory • First proposed by Sir James Jean in 1920 • 1948- Fred Hoyle, Thomas Gold, and Hermann Bondi • Discredited theory- not believed today (1960’s) • Basic Principles- The universe is expanding but it does not change its appearance over time. • The universe looks essentially the same from every point in it and at every time.

  8. Steady State continued • It was proposed as another mathematical explanation for the origin of the universe • Scientific Evidence against: • 1960- quasars- the luminous cores of distant galaxies • Also Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson discovered cosmic microwave radiation left over from the Big Bang.

  9. Oscillating Universe Model • Proposed partially by Einstein in the 1930’s and Richard Tolman- 1934 ( Tolman more to discredit) • Also proposed an alternative to the Creationist theory (more for the Hindu and Buddha dominated religions that believe in reincarnation) • Basic principle- It is a combination of the Big Bang theory followed by a Big Crunch. • If the universe expands then it will get to a point of maximum expansion. If this happens then a Big Crunch will happen ( the universe will collapse) only to Bounce Back

  10. Oscillating Model cont. • Has certain philosophical merit • Little scientific evidence for it. Mostly to discredit the theory. • If it were to happen this way then the end is more likely an end- we would go into a black hole and never return • Also- the cosmic microwave radiation • Tolman says this goes against the Second Law of Thermodynamics
