  2. 600,000 to 200,000 B.C. • Appearance of homo sapiens • Use of fire begins • Hunters and gatherers traveled in groups • Crop cultivation begins- cotton, coffee, and kola-nuts

  3. 25,000 to 10,000 B.C. • Paintings on rocks are made in North and South Africa

  4. 6,000 to 4,000 B.C. • People settle on the Nile, Congo, and Niger rivers • Farming and herding start to spread through South Africa • Ancient people in Zaire begin to use the abacus

  5. 5,000 to 4,000 B.C. • Ancient Egyptians begin burying their dead • Nile Valley people develop skills like weaving, glass making, and metal crafts

  6. 4,000 – 1,000 B.C. • Ancient African kingdoms grow: • Nubia (Kush) • Ethiopia • Egypt

  7. 1,000 to 800 B.C. • Mass migration of Bantu people • Spread language throughout Africa

  8. 750 – 600 B.C. • Kush rules Egypt from its capital called Meroe

  9. 500 B.C. – 200 A.D. • Nok people begin thriving in Central Nigerian forests • Skilled in ceramics
