  1. Ecuador vs. Tanzania By: EleazarOzuna and Tanner Hunt

  2. Eradicating Extreme Poverty and Hunger • Ecuador • GNI (Gross National Income) per capita in 2011 was $8310 • Underweight-moderate to severe: 6% of pop • Improved drinking water source usage: 94% of pop. • Population below international poverty line (make less then $1.25 per day): 5% • Tanzania • GNI per capita in 2011 was $1540 • Underweight-moderate to severe: 16% of pop. • Improved drinking water source usage: 53%of pop. • Population below international poverty line: 68%

  3. Eradicating Extreme Poverty and Hunger • Both Ecuador and Tanzania are doing fairly well with eradicating hunger with less then 20% of people in each country being moderately or severely underweight. • While Tanzania won’t completely eradicate hunger by 2015 (still at 16%), Ecuador is well on its way and will come close (only 6%). • Internationally the goal of eradicating extreme poverty and halving the number of people who make less than $1.25 a day has been met by the world. Ecuador met this with only 5% of people under this line, while Tanzania will not make this goal with 68% of people still living under the international poverty line.

  4. Achieve Universal Primary Education Ecuador Tanzania Primary School Participation to last primary grade: 81% of children Literacy rates of 18-24 year olds: 78% males and 76% females Provides free education • Primary School Participation to last primary grade: 92% of children • Literacy rates of 18-24 year olds: 98% males and 99% females • Provides free education

  5. Achieve Universal Primary Education • As a world internationally, primary education has reached 90% as of 2010 and a literacy rate of 95 literate young women to every 100 young men (gender gap diminishing). • Ecuador has reached and surpassed the world average at 92% primary education attendance and Tanzania is well on its way with 82% of attendance. • Both of our countries are likely to make the primary education goal by 2015.

  6. Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women Ecuador Tanzania Primary education participation attendance: 79% males, 82% females Secondary education participation attendance: 26% females, 24% for males • Primary education participation attendance (2007-2011): 92% males, 93% females • Secondary education participation attendance (2007-2011): 73% females, 71% for males

  7. Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women • As shown in the previous slide, both of our countries allow equal opportunity for males and females to gain an education. • While secondary education numbers are poor in Tanzania, they are still fairly equal for women. • Ecuador has more opportunity for women to work outside of farm work at 39% of women in the workforce in 2006. This has not been measured in Tanzania. • Worldwide the trend in improvements is comparable to our countries in these things and both of our countries made the 2015 goal.

  8. Reduce Child Mortality Ecuador Tanzania Current Under-5 mortality rank: 41th Immunization coverage for newborns (tetanus): 88% Low birthweight: 8% Infant mortality rate under 1 (per thousand): 45 Reduction rate of under-5 since 1990: 57% • Current Under-5 mortality rank: 86th • Immunization coverage for newborns (tetanus): 85% • Low birthweight: 8% • Infant mortality rate under 1 (per thousand): 20 • Reduction rate of under-5 since 1990: 56%

  9. Reduce Child Mortality • The world target was to reduce the under-5 mortality rate by 2/3 by 2015. It has been reduced from 12 million to 6 million as of 2012. • Both of our countries are extremely close at 56 and 57% and are right on the border of making it by 2015. We do not think that they quite will by then, however.

  10. Improve Maternal Health Ecuador Tanzania Antenatal care (2007-2012) for four visits: 43% Delivery care by a skilled attendant (2007-2012): 49% Maternal mortality ratio per 100,000 births (2007-2011): 450 • Antenatal care (2007-2012) for four visits: 58% • Delivery care by a skilled attendant (2007-2012): 98% • Maternal mortality ratio per 100,000 births (2007-2011): 61

  11. Improve Maternal Health • The goals in this millennial development are to reduce by three quarters the maternal mortality ratio and achieve universal access to reproductive health. • In Tanzania, neither of these goals will be met by 2015 with under half of women getting access to delivery and doctor visit help and having a fairly high mortality ratio still. • In Ecaudor, both of these goals have been achieved, but there is still room for improvement in the antenatal visits before delivery which still only occurs 58% of the time.

  12. Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria, and Other Diseases Ecuador Tanzania Adult HIV prevalence(%): 5.8% Young people: 2.9% Immunization broad range: 88% to 99% depending on type of immunization Households with at least one ITN (net) to protect against malaria: 64% • Adult HIV prevalence(%): 0.4% Young people:0.2% • Immunization broad range: 85% to 99% depending on type of Immunization • Malaria information not available

  13. Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria, and Other Diseases • The millennial goal is to have halted and begun to reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS by 2015 and to have universal access to treatment by 2010. • Neither of our countries will make the goal of universal access to treatment. • Both of our countries Have begun to reverse the spread as shown by the fact that percentage of affected young people is less than half of affected adults over the age of 25.

  14. Ensure Environmental Sustainability Ecuador Tanzania Use of improved sanitation facilities: 10% Improved drinking water source usage: 53% of pop. Initiatives to regulate toxic waste disposal from gold mines. • Use of improved sanitation facilities: 92% • Improved drinking water source usage: 94% of pop. • Initiative to restrict use of oil reserves within national parks.

  15. Ensure Environmental Sustainability • The goals with this are to reverse the loss of environmental resources through country policies, reduce biodiversity loss by 2010, halve the population of people without safe drinking water, and improve the lives of 100 million slum dwellers by 2020. • The goal of halving the population without clean drinking water has been met in both of our countries. • Initiatives to save national park areas and drill for less oil have been made in Ecuador, but not yet passed. In Tanzania programs to stop deforestation on national reserve areas have started to slow the loss of environmental timber. • Both in Ecuador and Tanzania biodiversity loss has not been reversed and most likely will not be by 2015.

  16. Develop a Global Partnership for Development • The world goals are to develop more free trade in the global market, address special needs of the least developed countries, address the needs of landlocked countries and islands, help developing countries get out of debt, provide access to affordable drugs, and make new technologies available to developing countries (especially in communication) Additionally, oil drilling has started to help the country economically although it hurts the environmental sustainability. • China has shown interest in gold mining in Tanzania and its company Sichuan Hongda Group has partnered with local mines in developing a gold export between Tanzania and China. Additionally, the United Kingdom has had recent talks of buying thousands of tons of tea leaves from Zanzibar in Tanzania as well. These partnerships will help Tanzania to approach the millennial goals, but they will not be made by 2015. • Using a multilateral investment fund partnered with the company Global Partnerships, technologies are being brought to rural areas of Ecuador and medical supplies to help these areas catch up to the rest of the country.
