  1. Integrated Digital English Acceleration (I-DEA) Using Techonolgy to Transform ESL Instruction at Lower Levels

  2. Who benefits from IDEA? Josefina is a 30-year-old student from Oaxaca, Mexico. She finished high school in Mexico, but has no equivalent US diploma. As a result of her previous education, she has a good grasp of grammar structures and she understands scientific concepts. She is a critical thinker and fast learner. This is her first formal ESL class. In addition to Spanish, Josefina speaks one of the indigenous languages common in and around Oaxaca. Josefina has a husband and three children (11, 5, and 3). She pushes the older two hard to excel in school. Her dream is to continue her education and become a nurse. “ I have no computer at my house. I like the computer. When my children go to bed, I study. 10 o’clock, time for me. I study on the computer.”

  3. Better Skills, Brighter Furtures… Sofia is a 52-year-old student from Guadalajara, Mexico. She has a third-grade education without previous additional schooling. She has lived in the United States for 30 years. The 2014 winter quarter IDEA class is her first attempt at picking up her education. Sofia is very motivated because she needs to learn more English to succeed in her job. Sofia is the lead cleaner and needs to supervise some other cleaners – In a way, Sofia is ahead of herself: She has moved into a lead position, but does not have the English skills to support it.

  4. Building a Stronger Washington • IDEA LEARNERS! demonstrate advances in their English language and digital skills, as well as progress along career and college pathways toward family-wage jobs • THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING! the vision is to engage cohorts of adult English language learners at all 34 Washington colleges and improve instruction for low level ESL learners • IDEA LEARNERS! enter into I‑BEST and other post-secondary programs to develop the job-specific skills required for Washington’s current and future workforce
