  1. Proposal of FAA AwardSupported by The Consulate General of France in HK & Macau

  2. BACKGROUND The French Alumni Association believes that a language is only alive if it isexpressed effectively through conversation. The universities in Hong Kong are playing an importantroleinteaching the French language and promoting French culture. The local universities offer courses on campus, e.g. Bachelor Degree of European Studies andvarious interest groups in language centers. For many people, their life-long relationships with France start from the tertiary education.

  3. BACKGROUND However, many students have difficulties expressing themselves orally in French, even when they may already be good at reading and writing the language.We believe this may be due to the lack of emphasis on oral expression in their local education, and the lack of opportunity to practice French in their daily life.

  4. OBJECTIVE The FAA proposes the French Alumni Association Award in order to encourage greater proficiency in spoken French in university students, and to promote French culture in Hong Kong

  5. TARGET & APPLICATION PERIOD “Full-time Students” studying a “French Course” at one of the participating Universities. Application period: • Applications will be open in Spring.

PROMOTION PLAN We aim to recruit applicants through • French Department of the universities • Office of Student Affairs in the universities • FAA website • Consulate General of France in HK & Macau office and website Promotional materials will be produced: • Poster • Application Form • Appeal Letter • E-flyer

  7. PRIZE PRESENTATION The presentation of the FAA award will be held during the « Fête de francophonie » in March 2010. Winners will be award trophies, and prizes donated by sponsors.

  8. SELECTION PROCEDURE First Round: • Students should complete an application form which can be downloaded from the FAA website and send a soundtrack to French Alumni Association for pre-selection • The soundtrack should : • be recorded by the candidate in French only • contain a Self-introduction and elaborate the candidate’s motivation(s) for learning French • be in MP3 format and burned into a CDROM. • be no more than 3 minutes in length.

SELECTION PROCEDURE Second Round: • 3 finalists from each university will be invited for an interview with the judging panel Interview Format: • The interview comprises of two parts (10 minutes in total): • Presentation • Q&A • Presentation: • Students will be given three topics approximately 2 weeks before the interview among which one topic will be selected randomly on the spot: • Tourism in France • French Gastronomy • Current Affairs in France

SELECTION PROCEDURE Second Round: Interview Format: • Judging criteria of the speech presentation will be weighted, based on: • Fluency • Pronunciation • Vocabulary • Content • Presentation skills • Remarks: no audio and visual aid will be allowed • ONE student from each university will be selected as the winner of the FAA award

  11. JUDGING PANEL Judging panel will be comprised of: • One representative from the Consulate General of France in HK & Macau • Two representatives from French Alumni Association • One representative from a local French association. • One representative from French Community / Sponsor

ABOUT FAA • The French Alumni Association is newly established with the mission of fostering and enhancing the bonds of friendship among permanent residents in Hong Kong and Macau who have studied in France and individuals with keen interest in French culture. • The Ex-co consists of a group of enthusiastic people, who have studied in France for no less than 3 months, aims at promoting and catering for the welfare and interests of Alumni. • We organize social, cultural, educational and scientific activities among members of the Association which may involve the participation of "French government, French professional organizations, French educational institutions in Hong Kong or in France".
