  1. EASTER SUNDAY 2014 LUKE 24: 1 - 12

  2. INTRODUCTION

  3. Luke 24: 1 - 12 On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. 2They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them.

  4. Luke 24: 1 - 12 5In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? 6He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: 7‘The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’ ” 8Then they remembered his words.

  5. Luke 24: 1 - 12 9When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others. 10It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles. 11But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense. 12Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened.

  6. The Character List. A group of grieving women Two angels The rest of the (doubting) disciples Peter

  7. A Very Strange Encounter. (V 1 – 8). Two groups Different expectations One looking for a dead body The others surprised they are looking for a body! Why do you look for the living among the dead?

  8. Expectation. The women have NO EXPECTATION that Jesus is risen from the dead That is not the direction they are looking in. "God keeps his word, even when it involves things that seem impossible” Here is the truth: "Jesus is alive, the tomb could not hold him". ‘Then they remembered’(V8)

  9. The Disbelieving Disciples. V 9 – 11. "The first skeptics Jesus faces are His disciples". Bock. "The resurrection consistently catches the disciples off guard, and they have a difficult time adjusting to the reality that Jesus is alive again". Their journey to faith in a RISEN SAVIOUR is not yet complete

  10. Peter. V 12. Peter goes off to investigate for himself. He handles the grave clothes with his own bare hands. He then begins to wonder……..

  11. Application. "Resurrection is the central hope of the Christian faith, but the church did not come to believe it easily". Christianity was birthed in the supernatural, and is at its heart a relationship with God that defies all logic No problem you are facing is too big for God! He conquered death!

  12. Conclusion. "The cross was not the end of Jesus' story, for it is followed by a resurrection that signifies a new beginning". Bock. Let’s go out from here this morning, celebrating resurrection life! Let’s tell everyone who will listen that Jesus is alive. Lets remember that Jesus calls us – you and me – by name!!!
