  1. Using Snap Plus as a Tool to Develop & Review NM Plans If you need help call: Sue Porter 608-224-4605 Sara Walling 608-224-4524 Stephanie Schneider 608-224-4511

  3. Developing aplan 22 of 25 plans, 88%, used Snap Plus, compared to 74% last year. Steps 1.-3. Install current version http://www.snapplus.net/ • Add new operation with File then New. Select location and name the database. • Fill Farm Screen. Use 2nd year manure credits for CAFO. Excess N will turn red. New Alfalfa [grassy, yr 3+] Data Compression allows you to email the database.

  4. Developing a plan Step 4. Import Soil Tests Export Soil Test - Sample Logfor next round of test • Copies field name and acres from Snap Plus

  5. Developinga plan Step 5. Field Tab • Select the field’s dominant critical soil type covering 10% or more of the field. • Incorporate spreading restrictions into the plan maps and Snap Plus • Below Field Slope to Water (%)Change defaults if field slopes are greater than 6%. • Distance to Water (ft) should be something other than 0-300 if the field is NOT next to surface water. New link to restriction maps

  6. On-line 590 NMP Spreading Restriction Maps Available online at: http://mmas-mapping.soils.wisc.edu/

  7. Developing a plan • Step 6. • Nutrient Sources • Add manures, volumes, fertilizers • Values added

  8. Nutrient SourcesAdd Bio-solids

  9. Developing a plan • Step 6. • Nutrient Sources • Manure production estimator annual volume: • Animal type & size • Storage volume • Spreader calibration

  10. Developinga plan • Step 6. • Nutrient Sources • Animal Units Calculator • Copies from Production Est. into AU Calculator • Mixed Animal Units NR 243 CAFO • Non-Mixed AU EPA

  11. Developinga plan • Step 7. • Cropping Screen • Rotation Wizard • Choose operation • Add crops and applications for multiple fields and years at one time. • Changes crops or applications for year(s). Use for updating plan.

  12. Cropping Screen • Rotation Wizard • Add crops & applications • Select fields with the rotation • Enter the field’s year of the crop rotation

  13. Update plan with the real Crop - yields, tillage & applications

  14. HELP! F1 will pull up Help for any screen.

  15. Rotation Summary Account for all the manure/nutrients on all farms in the operations. Plan all P applications during the crop rotation. Amend rotations and applications with what really was done. • Soil Loss Over "T" Turns Red

  16. MRTN Settings Change MRTN settings from the cropping screen or Rotation Wizard

  17. Field Data and 590 Assessment Plan Report shows N excess applications, PI, soil test P PPM, rotation P2O5 balance. Soil Test Report shows acres/sample. Cropping Trends Report starting at the earliest year shows the manure applied annually and the acres of crops grown. Are the rotations and application working for the farm? Manure Production Report shows estimated manure generation by size category annually. Spreading and NM Sorted by Crop Report review consistency in nutrient applications and tillage used for the current plan year. Review Plans by Running Reports & Checking the Cropping Screen

  18. Field Data and 590 Assessment Excess N applications will show here by year and field.

  19. Field Data and 590 Assessment Are defaults correct? No winter manure applications? Does the report period plan the whole alfalfa rotation and grain with the seeding year? Do all fields meet T? PI <6? Or Soil Test P balance?

  20. Manure Application Manure is applied at least once during the rotation. The P2O5 balance target is -101, and the balance is -109 and the field complies with the 2007-2013 rotation and applications.

  21. Soil Test Report Are the soil tests current? Is the lab WDATCP certified? Are the soil samples 5 acres in size or less to meet requirements for uniform field recommendations?

  22. Cropping Trends Is all the manure allocated every year? Will each crop year have enough corn and hay?

  23. How can we increase NM implementation? • Understand how Snap Plus plans are developed & updated. • Electronic NM plan submissions for costharing, permits, and ordinance requirements. • Haulers need to keep application logs of nutrient rates applied and provide to the farmer. • Farmers need to have the real applications reflected in their NM plan of N-P-K. • Agencies can work toward more consistent requirements for applications restrictions and more timely record keeping for plan updates.
