  2. Question 1 – Is it A or B? • You buy a second-hand car from a dealer and the car breaks down within three weeks. What are your rights? • You don’t have any rights on second-hand cars. • You have exactly the same rights on second-hand cars as you do on new cars.

  3. Question 2 – Is it A, B and/or C? You buy a second-hand car from a dealer and find out two years later that the mileage has been ‘clocked’. What should you do? • Say nothing and trade-in the car to another dealer. • Contact the trader and report the matter to Trading Standards. • Go back to the trader and ask for a new car.

  4. Question 3– Is it A or B? A doorstep trader calls to you door and informs you that your tiles have come loose and he can fix them for you immediately for £1,000. What should you do? Get a lift with him to the bank and withdraw the cash to pay him immediately. Never agree to anything on the spot. Take time to think. Shop around.

  5. Question 4 - Is it A, B or C? You are thinking about getting some home improvements carried out but don’t know who to get to do the work. Do you: • Ring the mobile number on the flier put through your door for ‘Builders R Us – No job too big!’ • Ask friends and neighbours for recommendations for a reputable tradesman. • Pick the first name out of the Yellow Pages.

  6. Question 5 – Is it A, B or C? You bought a 640 GB computer three months ago. You discover that the computer only has 320 GB of memory. You return it to the trader who tells you to return it to the manufacturer. What are your rights? You can reject the goods and ask for a full refund. You must contact the manufacturer to complain. You are entitled to have your complaint dealt with by the retailer.

  7. Question 6 - Is it A, B and/or C? You decide to get an extension to your property but you are concerned about how you should pay. Should you: Pay for the whole cost of the extension up front. Pay for the job in stages. Pay for some of the work by credit card.

  8. Question 7 – Is it A, B, C or D? You employ a builder to build you a new extension. He agrees that the work will be finished within three months. The builder is a member of the Federation of Master Builders. After eight months, the extension is still not built and it is beginning to collapse in places. What are your rights? The work should be carried out with reasonable care and skill. The work should be carried out within a reasonable time. You should complain to the trader and his trade association. All of the above.

  9. Question 8 – Is it A or B? You buy a new leather sofa from a furniture showroom. You sign an invoice that says ‘Seen and inspected. No refunds.’ When the sofa is delivered you notice a tear on a cushion. You complain to the trader who tells you that you can’t get a refund. What are your rights? • You have signed the invoice stating that you have inspected the goods so you no longer have any rights. • Your rights are not affected. The statement is trying to restrict your statutory rights.
