  2. Climate Change Adaptation What is climate change adaptation? Adjustment in natural or human systems to a new or changing environment that exploits beneficial opportunities or moderates negative effects

  3. The Adaptation Process http://nca2014.globalchange.gov/report/response-strategies/adaptation

  4. UNFCCC Global Environmental Facility (GEF) Adaptation Funds • Least Developed Countries Fund (LDCF) • Special Climate Change Fund (SCCF) • Strategic Priority for Adaptation (SPA) http://www.thegef.org/gef/adaptation

  5. Climate Adaptation Action Typology Bonizella Biagini , Rosina Bierbaum , Missy Stults , Saliha Dobardzic , Shannon M. McNeeley A typology of adaptation actions: A global look at climate adaptation actions financed through the Global Environment Facility Global Environmental Change, Volume 25, 2014, 97 – 108 http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.gloenvcha.2014.01.003 (OPEN ACCESS)

  6. Analysis • Document analysis (grounded theory) • Coding • Families • Draft Typology • Literature review • Phone/Skype interviews • Online Surveys

  7. Conclusions • First compendium of adaptation actions financed through three Global Environment Facility funds. • 10 types of 158 adaptation activities were identified through an analysis of 92 projects in 70 countries. • Results show that early ideas of climate adaptation theoreticians are consistent with results from the field. • This typology serves to provide insight into what exactly adaptation is in practical terms. • The typology is a beginning for furthering harmonization between theory and practice.
