  2. Objectives • Explain the roles of leaders and followers. • Demonstrate the qualities of effective team members. • Identify the types of leadership.

  3. Terms to Know • Team – group of people organized around a common goal. • Leader – a person who influences the behavior of others • Follower – a person who supports a group by helping put goals into action.

  4. Qualities of Effective Team Members • Put the interest of the team first. • Always emphasize “we” instead of “me” • Keep open minds and are willing to discuss ALL ideas. • Pay close attention when others speak.

  5. Types of Leaders • Autocratic • Demands the cooperation of others • Has full control of the group • Stresses meeting goals • Democratic • Members vote on what to do • Members encouraged to participate • Stresses the needs and wishes of individuals • Laissez-faire • Members do whatever they want • Leaders play down roles in group • Leaders serve as a resource to the group • May not reach goals

Functions of Leaders • Set an example • Motivate followers • Intrinsic motivation comes from within • Extrinsic motivation comes from the environment • Guide planning • Brainstorming is a group problem-solving method where individuals offer all ideas that come to mind • Use tact • What to do/say to avoid offending others • Give recognition • Promote cultural diversity

  9. Think Pair Share Square Activity • Leaders Involve Others • Use Page 127 Handout to complete. • Divide up into pairs by: • Row 1 and 2, • Row 3 and 4, • Row 5, 6 and 7 • With your partner brainstorm how leaders can involve others. • When finished find another set of partners and share again.
