  1. IEEE 802.19Wireless Coexistence TAG What is a Coexistence Assurance Document? Steve Shellhammer shellhammer@ieee.org Steve Shellhammer, Intel Corporation

  2. Proposed 802 Rules • The 802.19 Coexistence TAG is proposing changes to the 802 Policies and Procedures to address coexistence • IEEE 802.19-04/0010r6 • The new rules would require that the working group produce a coexistence assurance (CA) document and supply the document with the draft at letter and sponsor ballot. Steve Shellhammer, Intel Corporation

  3. Purpose of a CA Document • A CA document is intended to demonstrate that the proposed standard coexists with current 802 wireless standards in unlicensed. • The two wireless standards continue to operate acceptably. • Current 802 wireless standards are those that have been ratified, not drafts. Steve Shellhammer, Intel Corporation

  4. Two way Street • Coexistence needs to be considered from two perspectives • How the new standard would impact the performance of the current standard • How the current standard would impact the performance of the proposed standard. Steve Shellhammer, Intel Corporation

  5. Coexistence Assurance Methodology • IEEE 802.19 Coexistence TAG is developing a Coexistence Assurance Methodology document to give guidance to the working groups on what is to be included in a coexistence assurance document. • This presentation gives a brief overview of what would be required. Steve Shellhammer, Intel Corporation

  6. Technical Argument in CA Document • A coexistence assurance document makes technical arguments that the proposed standard coexists with other standards. • This is done by giving technical arguments that the performance of the wireless networks is not significantly degraded in the presence of interference from the other wireless network. Steve Shellhammer, Intel Corporation

  7. Interference Model • One method of making these technical arguments is to build an interference model • The WG has a choice between different levels of effort and model accuracy in developing this model • Analytical • Simulation • Combination Steve Shellhammer, Intel Corporation

  8. List of Wireless Networks Considered • List of all other unlicensed 802 wireless standards considered in the CA document • Optional list of other wireless systems to be considered (if the WG chooses to consider systems other than 802 systems) Steve Shellhammer, Intel Corporation

  9. Performance Metrics • Depending on the applications running on each wireless network several performance metrics should be considered • Throughput • Latency (VoIP) • Frame Loss Rate • Etc. Steve Shellhammer, Intel Corporation

  10. Relative Performance • Highly accurate absolute performance is not the issue. • The CA document should show the relative performance of the wireless networks, with and without interference. Steve Shellhammer, Intel Corporation

  11. Physical Topology • Specify the number of nodes in each network • Specify the location of the devices • Vary d and look at network performance Network 1 d Network 2 Steve Shellhammer, Intel Corporation

  12. Results • The CA documents could plot performance metrics as a function network separation • The performance metrics could then be plotted with and without interference • This information would give an indication of the coexistence of the two wireless networks Steve Shellhammer, Intel Corporation

  13. Conclusions • We would encourage members of the wireless working groups to join 802.19 in developing the CA methodology document • Comments? Steve Shellhammer, Intel Corporation
