  6. Research Shows: • Bullies tend to have difficulty making friends. • Gain popularity/ peer status. • Attention & respect gained from negative actions/threats. • Bullying is often considered normal behavior among boys.

  7. What it means to be a Victim Characteristics: BEING A TARGET AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK FOR LONG PERIOD OF TIME. VICTIMS = OFTEN YOUNGER/WEAKER OR SICKER THAN PEERS. VICTIMS= REPORTED CLOSER WITH SIBLINGS & PARENTS TO COPE. Victims= strong fears or dislike for school. Most extreme victims= few or no friends & alone at activities.

Symptoms a Child is a Victim of Bullying • Acts moody or sullen. • Loses interest in school work/ grades drop. • Becomes Depressed. • Loses appetite/trouble eating. • Torn clothes/unexplained wounds. • Asks for extra $$$... • Refuses to attend school/shows fear. • Wants to carry “protection item.”

  13. Working With Bullies • Work in small groups • Reinforce Children • Teach Social Skills using Pets Working With Victims • Provide social interaction with other children • Strategies of ways to respond to bullying • Pair with neither bullies nor victims

  14. What Schools can do • Accurate assessment of the Problem. • Maintain higher visibility. • Students develop own class rules about bullying • In-service training for teachers & parents • Serious talks with bullies

  15. What Parents Can Do • Create safe environment for child • Being bullied is not their fault • DO NOT FIGHT OR HIT • Notify teachers IMMEDIATELY • Offer to make complaint for your child
