  1. Christian Heritage Church Indeed my Heritage is Beautiful To Me (Psalm 16:6b)

  2. Acts 18:18-23 Paul, having remained many days longer, took leave of the brethren and put out to sea for Syria, and with him were Priscilla and Aquila. In Cenchrea he had his hair cut, for he was keeping a vow. They came to Ephesus, and he left them there. Now he himself entered the synagogue and reasoned with the Jews. When they asked him to stay for a longer time, he did not consent, but taking leave of them and saying, "I will return to you again if God wills," he set sail from Ephesus. When he had landed at Caesarea, he went up and greeted the church [at Jerusalem], and went down to Antioch. And having spent some time there, he left and passed successively through the Galatian region and Phrygia, strengthening all the disciples.

  3. Paul: A Man Called by God • A Concerned Shepherd • A Committed Mentor • A Converted Jew • A Convincing Ambassador • A Church Planter • A Church Member • A Man With a Mission

  4. A Concerned Shepherd • Acts 18:18aPaul, having remained many days longer… • In spite of blasphemous Jews and their recent attack on him, Paul stayed on. • Later on in vs. 20 they ask him to stay on at Ephesus and he does not consent • Paul uses spiritual discernment • His desire was to fulfill his calling and do what was best for the church • Paul had tremendous courage and followed God’s leading • This courage was fueled by a love for God’s people

  5. A Concerned Shepherd 2 Corinthians 12:14-15Here for this third time I am ready to come to you, and I will not be a burden to you; for I do not seek what is yours, but you; for children are not responsible to save up for their parents, but parents for their children. I will most gladly spend and be expended for your souls Philippians 2:17But even if I am being poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I rejoice and share my joy with you all. Colossians 1:24Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I do my share on behalf of His body, which is the church

  6. A Committed Mentor Acts 18:18b…took leave of the brethren and put out to sea for Syria, and with him were Priscilla and Aquila… Paul was a committed mentor always bringing people with him; Luke, Timothy and Silas, Barnabas and Mark, and now Aquila and Priscilla Pay attention to all of the personal greetings in the epistles Paul would pour his life into people who would in turn pour their lives into others – like Priscilla and Aquila Paul mentored Priscilla and Aquila and then left them in Ephesus when departed

  7. A Committed Mentor Paul poured his life into Timothy 2 Timothy 2:1-3You therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. The things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. Suffer hardship with me, as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. Not only do we need good mentors, we need faithful people willing to be trained and count the cost of discipleship Modern Christianity has, for the most part, lost its Zeal for the Glory of God and the building of His Kingdom

  8. A Committed Mentor Paul wrote Romans from Corinth and look what he says about Aquila and Priscilla Romans 16:3-4Greet Priscilla and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus, who for my life risked their own necks, to whom not only do I give thanks, but also all the churches of the Gentiles This is the commitment on the part of the one being mentored to the mentor Timothy, Silas, Luke, Aquila and Priscilla were all teachable, but more than that they were willing to, like Paul, lay down their lives for the glory of God and the building of His Kingdom

  9. A Converted Jew Acts 18:18c…In Cenchrea he had his hair cut, for he was keeping a vow. Paul was a Christian, but does not renounce his heritage Paul loved his fellow Jews Romans 9:1-3I am telling the truth in Christ, I am not lying, my conscience testifies with me in the Holy Spirit, that I have great sorrow and unceasing grief in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were accursed, separated from Christ for the sake of my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh How about us, do we feel this way about our kinsman?

  10. A Converted Jew Paul most likely made a Nazirite Vow (Numbers 6) Acts 18:21 NASBbut taking leave of them and saying, "I will return to you again if God wills," he set sail from Ephesus. Acts 18:21 KJVBut bade them farewell, saying, I must by all means keep this feast that cometh in Jerusalem: but I will return again unto you, if God will. And he sailed from Ephesus. Acts 18:22 Amplified BibleWhen he landed at Caesarea, he went up and saluted the church [at Jerusalem], and then went down to Antioch. Paul did not completely divorce himself from his Jewish heritage and participated in some meaningful ceremonies

  11. A Convincing Ambassador Acts 18:19They came to Ephesus, and he left them there, now he himself entered the synagogue and reasoned with the Jews. Paul reasoned with the Jews Isaiah 1:18"Come now, and let us reason together," Says the LORD,“ Acts 17:2And according to Paul's custom, he went to them, and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures, explaining and giving evidence that the Christ had to suffer and rise again from the dead, and saying, "This Jesus whom I am proclaiming to you is the Christ."

  12. A Convincing Ambassador Acts 18:4And he was reasoning in the synagogue every Sabbath and trying to persuade Jews and Greeks. Acts 19:26"You see and hear that not only in Ephesus, but in almost all of Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away a considerable number of people, saying that gods made with hands are no gods at all. He reasoned and He persuaded men 2 Corinthians 5:20Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.

  13. A Church Planter Acts 18:20-21When they asked him to stay for a longer time, he did not consent, but taking leave of them and saying, "I will return to you again if God wills," he set sail from Ephesus. Paul was a church planter and had clear understanding of what his God ordained purpose was Paul left Aquila and Priscilla behind at Ephesus He was not to stay in Corinth or in Ephesus, but if God wills he would return Ephesus was in Asia – a closed door had now opened

  14. A Church Member Acts 18:22-23aWhen he had landed at Caesarea, he went up and greeted the church [at Jerusalem], and went down to Antioch. And having spent some time there… He fostered relationships with other churches He returned to Antioch, the church that sent him Paul’s First Missionary Journey: Acts 13 - While they were ministering to the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them."

  15. A Church Member Paul’s Return: Acts 14 – After planting churches in Pisidia, Iconium, Lystra and Derbe - From there they sailed to Antioch, from which they had been commended to the grace of God for the work that they had accomplished. When they had arrived and gathered the church together, they began to report all things that God had done with them and how He had opened a door of faith to the Gentiles. And they spent a long time with the disciples Connection and Accountability Refreshment, Fellowship, Mutual Edification

  16. A Church Member Paul’s Second Missionary Journey: Acts 15 - Paul chose Silas and left, being committed by the brethren to the grace of the Lord. Paul’s Return: Acts 18 – After planting churches in Philippi, Thessalonica, Berea, Athens, Corinth and Ephesus – [Paul] went down to Antioch. And having spent some time there Connection and Accountability Refreshment, Fellowship, Mutual Edification The “Lone Ranger” syndrome

  17. A Man With a Mission Acts 18:23And having spent some time there, he left and passed successively through the Galatian region and Phrygia, strengthening all the disciples. This verse begins Paul's third missionary journey Paul was a man with a Mission and had a clear understanding of what his God ordained purpose was God has put a unique calling on each of our lives – do you know what it is? We can’t all be a Paul

  18. Paul: A Man Called by God Do you know what the unique calling of God is on your life? Are you willing to spend and be spent for the Glory of God and the building of His Kingdom?
