  1. The Fruit of the Spirit: Kindness and GoodnessMatthew 18:21-35 Galatians 5 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is ----, ---, ------, patience, --------, -------, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

  2. “The unmerciful servant” A story about forgiving It’s about giving It’s also about being merciful and generous About being kind and good

  3. Matthew 18 21 Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?” 22 Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.

  4. You can keep track of seven forgiven sins Keeping count up to 77 is not possible for most of us Forgive

  5. 23 “Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. 24 As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand talents was brought to him. 25 Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt.

  6. 26 “The servant fell on his knees before him. ‘Be patient with me,’ he begged, ‘and I will pay back everything.’ 27 The servant’s master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go.

  7. He begged for more time The king forgave the debt and let him go Why? He knew the man would never be able to repay The debt was too large

  8. 28 “But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii. He grabbed him and began to choke him. ‘Pay back what you owe me!’ he demanded.

  9. 29 “His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay you back.’ 30 “But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt.

  10. Instead of returning the mercy that was shown to him He had a man thrown in jail for a small debt The kindness and goodness that was shown to him – he refused to share

  11. 31 When the other servants saw what had happened, they were greatly distressed and went and told their master everything that had happened.

  13. 32 “Then the master called the servant in. ‘You wicked servant,’ he said, ‘I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. 33 Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?’

  14. We receive kindness and goodness from God We are expected to share that mercy, generosity and compassion with others Goodness and mercy are about sharing, giving, being generous, having compassion – especially in dealing with the weak and the poor

  15. 34 In anger his master turned him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed. 35 “This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother from your heart.”

  16. How does one pay a debt when in jail? Never It is simply a punishment that never ends

  17. This is the story of Christ He demands payment We cannot pay He forgives He gives generously In this, he demonstrates his kindness and goodness

  18. Jesus illustrates for us… The strong help the weak The wealthy help the poor Our response… We are to help each other Especially the weak and poor

  19. This story comes with a warning There is a lot to loose if you are… Unable to forgive Unwilling to give Un willing to have mercy on others

  20. If you can’t forgive… You can’t be forgiven If you can’t forgive… It’s probably because you haven’t accepted and understood the kindness and mercy available from God

  21. The fruit of the spirit… Is Not has We are to be kind and good It is our nature in Christ

  22. Galatians 5:22-23 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

  23. Forgive a lot! God forgave because we could not repay We honor God with our goodness and kindness to others Someone is always watching! Our inability to be good and kind comes with a high price We are kind and good in Christ
