  3. Population Density • Population density is the number of people who live in an area per square kilometre

  4. How do we calculate population density? • 1) Find the population of a country • 2) Find the area of the country’s land in km squared • 3) Divide the number of people by the area

  6. Top 7 • 1. Monaco 16,487 ppl per square km • 2. Singapore • 3. Malta • 4. Bahrain • 5. Maldives • 6. Bangladesh • 7. Barbados 1000 ppl per square km

  8. And the answer is….. 49 per km squared

  10. And the answer is…. 3.1 per km squared

  15. Problems with high pop. density • Overcrowding • Strain on resources (food, water, electricity) • Pollution • Security

  20. What are some problems of low population density? • Small selection of mates • Less of a cultural experience • Security (protection) • Difficult to get certain items

  21. Why do people live where they do? What factors determine where people choose to settle?

  22. Some Factors Include: • Natural Resources > what natural resources are available in the area? (water, oil, gold etc.) • Weather > most people like to be in warmer climates whenever possible • Where is the work? > usually there are more jobs in the city….

Factors Continued… • Risk of natural disasters > some areas of North America are more prone to flooding, earthquakes, etc. can you think of any examples? • Where is your family + friends? > newcomers especially will go to areas where their family is, or where people from their native country are
