  1. Cocaine By Ina Huang

  2. What is Cocaine and what does it look like? • Cocaine refers to drug in powder form or crystal form • Cocaine = one of the most dangerous drugs • In crystal form = Crack cocaine • Crack: form of cocaine. Has been processed to be made into a rock crystal (a.k.a. freebase cocaine) • Cocaine = powerfully addictive stimulant drug • made of leaves of coca plants native to South America • Creates short term euphoria, energy, talkativeness in addiction to potentially dangerous physicals effects like raising heart rate and blood presure

  3. How is it used? • Powdered cocaine = inhaled through nose, absorbed through nasal tissue, or dissolved in water & injected into blood stream • Crack = can be smoked • Crystal = heated to produce vapors that are absorbed into blood stream though the lungs • Injecting & smoking cocaine = delivers the drug into bloodstream and brain; produce a quicker, stronger, short lasting high than snorting • High snorting cocaine = lasts 15-30 min • High from smoking 5-10 min • To sustain their high, people use drug in a pattern; taking drug repeatedly within short period of time • Pattern can lead to addiction, a chronic relapsing disease caused by changes in brain and characterized by drug seeker

  4. What are the effects? • Person do cocaine=almost impossible to break free mentally, physically • Physically=simulates key receptors within the brain, creates a euphoria, users quickly develop a tolerance • Only higher dosages and more frequent use can bring about the same effect • Cocaine can lead to death from respiratory (breathing) failure, stroke, bleeding in the brain • Children of cocaine = addicted mothers, comes into world as addicted themselves • Many woman suffers birth defects& many other problems • Very addictive • No antidote that can reverse cocaine’s effect-an overdose can be lethal • Physical signs of snorted cocaine & crack cocaine use = include a red, chapped and runny nose • Used regularly, snorted cocaine = cause a hole in the wall between the nostrils causing frequent nose bleed • Psychological signs of regular use = poor at school work & job performance, increased preoccupation with buying and preparing drug

  5. Did you know? • “You believe that coke will increase your perceptions, that it will allow you to surpass yourself, that you will be able to control things. It’s bloody nonsense. After a while you don’t pay your bills anymore, you don’t wash yourself anymore, you give up your friends, your family. You will become defenseless and alone.” —Nigel • Today, all ages uses cocaine. E.g. adults, kids as young as 8 years old. • Cocaine continues to increase • Crack = cracking sound produces by the rock as it is heated
