  2. Long Vs. Short Haul • Railroads would charge higher prices on lines with no competition (short distances) and cheaper prices on lines with a lot of competition (long distances)

  3. Mugwumps • Reform Republicans who refused to support the party’s candidate, James Blaine, in the election of 1884

  4. Political Machine • An organization of politicians that support a party boss and gather votes in their neighborhood to support their party’s candidates by fulfilling needs and providing services to constituents

  5. Social Gospel • People responded to the problems created by industrialization and urbanization in the late 19th century with religion. They supported child labor laws, civil service reform, and control of the trust.

  6. Stalwarts and Half-Breeds • Factions in the republican party, emerged by 1880 • Stalwarts: supported the spoils system • Half-Breeds: supported civil service reform

  7. Trust • Corporations in the same industry give their stock in the individual companies to a board of trustees in return for stock certificates that earn dividends. It eliminates competition.

  8. Turner Thesis • Frederick Jackson Turner believed the frontier was the key factor in the development of American democracy and institutions. Frontier served as a “safety valve” during periods of economic crisis.

  9. “Crime of ’73” • Coinage Act of 1873: U.S. ended the minting of silver dollars and placed country on the gold standard. People who supported an inflationary monetary policy, particularly farmers, and believed in the unlimited coinage of silver attacked this.

  10. “Rum, Romanism, and Rebellion” • In the 1884 election a Republican clergyman insulted New York Irish-Americans by saying this. Failure to repudiate this statement lost James Blaine, Republic candidate, New York.
