  4. Coaching Conversations When to use Types of Conversations Planning Conversation EVENT Reflecting Conversation Held before an event, meeting, or lesson. Purpose is to clarify issues before the event. Can also be used after an issue has been clarified in order to develop a plan for implementation Held after an event, meeting, or lesson. Purpose is to reflect on successes, new learnings, and concerns after the event. Can also be used when presented with data/new information that challenges existing status quo

  6. Opening Activity(Wagon Wheel) Please process the following three prompts: • What were the benefits of completing a full sequence (planning, • event, reflecting)? If you did not do it, what would you anticipate • the benefits would be? • How can you use what we have talked about so far in your job • responsibilities? • What do you anticipate from a Problem-Solving Conversation?

Carousel Activity on Energy Sources • Describe observable behaviors (See, Hear) that people would be doing if they were manifesting this energy source. • Describe (Add)additional observationsthat people might be doing. • Based on what you see, develop a summary statement that captures the essenceof this energy source. • Identify a list of counter examples. • Write a question that will evoke a response to this energy source.

  10. Listening for Energy Sources • Listen to the conversation • Write down specific statements that connect to specific energy sources • Create a goal statement that connects to the energy source

Elements of thePace • Empathy Capture the emotion expressed by your partner Briefly summarize the situation • Content • Goal Identify the energy source--create a statement with “You want to have…” or “You want to be…” that relates to this energy source • Pathway This will provide a link between the goal statement and the “Leading Question”

  12. Elements of thePace • Empathy You’re frustrated… You’re excited…. You’re concerned … …that students are not attending class …with the quality and quantity of student work …about the time required to grade student work • Content • Goal You want to have the tools to deal with the situation. You want to be recreating this mindset throughout the year. You want to have access to the resources needed • Pathway And you are trying to figure out how to make this happen

  13. Example of Complete Pace You are concerned… … with the time required to meet the needs of the diverse learners in your classroom. You want to have your life organized around your priorities… …and you are trying to figure out how to do this.

  14. Metacoaching—Groups of 3 • Each of you will lead a P-S conversation up to the Lead • Metacoach will then coach in a reflective conversation to determine the Lead question • P-S conversation will be resumed starting with the Pace and Lead—typically becomes a planning conversation.

Problem Solving Conversation Pace: (Series of Paraphrases) • Empathy • Content • Goal • Pathway Lead: (Mediational Question that pushes thinking on a particular energy source) • Challenges existing state by focusing on desired state • Pushes identification of overarching value/outcome • Reframes the situation • Repace
